Warhawks Use Long Ball In 7-3 Win Over Cajuns

LAFAYETTE – ULM never trailed Saturday and used a three-run home run in the ninth inning from Jake Haggard to pull away for a 7-3 win over Louisiana at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park, clinching the weekend series for the second straight season.
 
Brandt Corley (2-1) earned the win for ULM (16-12, 6-2 SBC), allowing one run on four hits over five innings. He walked five and worked out of trouble as Louisiana stranded eight runners over the first five innings. Holden Hess recorded his second save in as many games, striking out the side in the ninth.
 
Andrew Herrmann (3-2) turned in a solid outing for Louisiana (17-10, 2-6 SBC), allowing three runs on six hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out seven.
 
ULM opened the scoring in the second inning when Haggard singled and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Kade Dupont for a 1-0 lead.
 
Louisiana threatened in the third after Jayce LaCava singled and Donovan LaSalle doubled, but LaCava was thrown out at the plate on a relay to end the inning. The Cajuns broke through in the fifth when Noah Lewis doubled and later scored on a groundout by Josh Lim to tie the game, 1-1.
 
The Warhawks answered in the sixth as Bryce Blaser led off the inning with a home run. Two batters later, Dayne Wray added his team-leading eighth homer of the season to extend the lead to 3-1.
 
LaSalle pulled Louisiana within a run with a leadoff home run in the seventh, but ULM responded in the eighth. Haggard doubled and scored on Dupont's single before delivering the decisive three-run homer in the ninth.
 
The Cajuns added a run in the eighth on a pinch-hit RBI double by Steven Spalitta, but a double play ended the threat.
 
Louisiana concludes its four-game homestand Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with fans able to listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
