Duo combine on seven-hitter with 12 K's as Louisiana averts sweep
LAFAYETTE – Ty Roman and Cody Brasch combined on a seven-hit shutout as Louisiana defeated ULM, 4-0, in the finale of a Sun Belt Conference series Sunday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Â
Roman worked the first 4.1 innings, facing the minimum through the first four frames. ULM mounted its biggest threat in the fifth when Jake Haggard and Marcus Aranda reached to open the inning. Roman struck out Davis Wray before Kyle Dupont dropped down a bunt single to load the bases.
Â
Brasch (3-1) entered and struck out Zach White and Garrett Wiethorn to strand all three runners. Roman allowed four hits with no walks and struck out seven in his 64-pitch outing.
Â
Louisiana (18-10, 3-6 SBC) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Rigoberto Hernandez singled off ULM starter J.C. Dermody and moved to second on a sacrifice by Colt Brown. Lee Amedee followed with an RBI single to left.
Â
The Cajuns added to their lead in the fifth when Jayce LaCava blasted a 394-foot solo home run to left with one out. Louisiana pushed across another run in the sixth on a one-out triple by Amadee led to an RBI double by Noah Lewis and capped the scoring on a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Maddox Mandino.
Â
Brasch allowed a leadoff single to Davis Mauzy in the sixth and, after striking out Micah Dean, issued his only walk of the game to Bryce Blaser. He then induced a ground ball from Haggard that shortstop Blaze Rodriguez turned into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Â
ULM (16-12, 6-3 SBC) threatened again in the eighth when White was hit by a pitch and Wiethorn singled to put two on with no outs. Mauzy lined out to second before Dean singled to right to load the bases. Brasch escaped the jam by inducing a comebacker from Blaser, starting a 1-2-3 double play.
Â
Roman and Brasch each threw 64 pitches, combining for 87 strikes in 128 total pitches with one walk and 12 strikeouts.
Â
Amedee led Louisiana with two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while Hernandez also recorded two hits. Dean paced ULM with two hits and finished the weekend 6-for-13.
Â
The win snapped a five-game Sun Belt losing streak for the Cajuns, who return to action Tuesday at McNeese before traveling to James Madison for a Thursday-Saturday conference series in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
