Ragin' Cajuns to wrap up nine-game homestand on Wednesday against #1/2 LSU
Â
Maddox Mandino and Colt Brown each collected two hits to pace the Cajuns' offense. Mandino scored twice, while Brown drove in a run as Louisiana built an early lead and held off a late UC San Diego rally.
Â
Louisiana (9-3) struck in the first inning when Donovan LaSalle doubled, moved to third on Drew Markle's sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Lee Amedee. After Rigoberto Hernandez drew a walk and a double steal pushed both runners into scoring position, Brown's groundout plated another run to give the Cajuns a 2-0 advantage.
Â
The lead grew to 3-0 in the second. Mandino singled and advanced to second on a walk to Griffin Hebert. An errant pickoff attempt by Tritons starter Austin Bowker (0-1) moved the runners up, and a second wild throw to third allowed Mandino to score.
Â
Tollett was dominant early, allowing just one hit through five innings. UC San Diego (4-6) broke through in the sixth with three consecutive one-out hits. An errant throw to third brought in the Tritons' first run, and JC Allen added an RBI single to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Â
The Cajuns answered in the bottom half. Mandino singled off reliever Nathan Ries, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Anthony Potestio and scored on LaSalle's groundout to restore a two-run cushion at 4-2.
Â
Freshman Sawyer Pruitt escaped a seventh-inning jam after the Tritons again strung together three one-out hits. Pruitt struck out Gabe Camacho looking and induced a flyout from Trevian Martinez to preserve the lead.
Â
UCSD pushed across another run in the eighth against Garret Carter. Alex Leopard opened the inning with an infield single, and following a walk to Allen and a sacrifice by Nathaniel Widelski, Leopard scored on Nick Costello's sacrifice fly off reliever Cody Brasch to make it 4-3.
Â
Brasch navigated further trouble in the ninth, allowing a one-out single and a two-out walk before striking out Leopard to secure his second save of the season.
Â
The victory – Louisiana's eighth in its last nine games – sets up a Wednesday night matchup against reigning national champion LSU (11-1) to conclude a nine-game homestand.
Â
The sold-out contest will be available on ESPN+, with fans able to listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
