Ragin' Cajuns beat reigning national champs before third-largest crowd in school history
LAFAYETTE – Lee Amedee and Colt Brown recorded a pair of hits apiece, and Louisiana scored three runs in the first inning to set the tone early and defeat No. 2-ranked LSU, 7-2, on Wednesday before an announced crowd of 5,736 – the third largest in school history – at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Â
Louisiana (10-3), which capped a nine-game homestand, won for the 10th time in its last 11 games. LSU (11-3) dropped its second straight game and third in its last six and had its two-game win streak against the Cajuns snapped.
Â
Drew Markle drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first off LSU starter Gavin Guidry (0-1) before scoring on Amedee's RBI double down the left-field line for an early 1-0 lead. A throwing error later in the inning – one of three recorded by the Tigers – allowed Amedee to score before Steven Spalitta added a sacrifice fly that pushed the advantage to 3-0.
Â
LSU cut into the deficit in the fifth inning when Trent Caraway launched a two-run home run to left field, trimming Louisiana's lead to 3-2.
Â
Louisiana answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Donovan LaSalle laced a double inside the first-base line before scoring when Markle reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an LSU throwing error. Rigoberto Hernandez followed with an RBI single through the right side before later scoring on a wild pitch, stretching the Cajuns' lead to 6-2.
Â
The Cajuns added an insurance run in the seventh when Spalitta delivered an RBI single to plate Brown.
Â
Louisiana finished with nine hits on the night, with Amedee going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI while Brown was 2-for-4.
Â
Cody Brasch (1-1) earned the win after allowing two hits and striking out five over 3.0 scoreless innings. Freshman Sawyer Pruitt closed out the final 4.0 innings for Louisiana to record his first career save, limiting LSU to two hits while striking out four.
Â
LSU collected seven hits in the contest, including three from leadoff hitter Derek Curiel, but stranded seven runners. Jake Brown added a pair of hits for the Tigers, with the 3-6 hitters going a combined 0-for-14 with six strikeouts.
Â
Louisiana travels to the DFW Metroplex for its first weekend road series beginning on Friday at Dallas Baptist. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the series resuming on Saturday at 3 and concluding on Sunday at 1.
Â
