Southpaw records first, complete-game, one-hit shutout since Evan Guillory in 2016
Â
Maddox Mandino had three hits and drove in a pair of runs while Donovan LaSalle recorded his first home run in a Cajun uniform as Louisiana (8-3) rebounded from a 7-3 loss in the series opener on Friday by posting its third shutout of the season
Â
Herrmann (2-0) struck out 13 and walked three in a 117-pitch performance, recording the program's first complete-game one-hit, shutout since Evan Guillory faced Northwestern State on April 5, 2016. The southpaw faced four batters over the minimum and never allowed a runner past second base.
Â
The lone hit by UCSD (4-5) came on a two-out single by Alex Leopard in the sixth inning, but Herrmann quickly regrouped and retired the next hitter to end the threat. He struck out the side in the eighth and closed the game with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to record his second career complete game and first since defeating Nebraska in 2025.
Â
Louisiana opened the scoring with two outs in the first when Colt Brown singled to left off UCSD starter Nic Gregson (0-3) to bring home Drew Markle for a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns broke the game open in the third with a three-run frame. Blaze Rodriguez lined a two-out, RBI single up the middle before Maddox Mandino followed with a two-run double to right-center, pushing the advantage to 4-0.
Â
LaSalle helped Louisiana add to the cushion in the sixth, leading off the inning with a 414-foot blast to left field – his first in a Louisiana uniform. Markle would later score on a sacrifice fly by Rigoberto Hernandez to make it 6-0.
Â
The Cajuns capped the scoring in the eighth. Mark Collins doubled to left and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Markle. Josh Lim followed with an RBI fielder's choice to plate LaSalle and extend the margin to its final 8-0.
Â
Mandino paced Louisiana at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. LaSalle finished 2-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored, while Brown added a pair of hits and an RBI.
Â
Gregson (0-3) allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings before Garrett Davidson and Quincey Brown combined to pitch the final 3.0 innings for the Tritons.
Â
Louisiana and UC San Diego conclude the three-game series Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest at Russo Park. The game will be televised on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
