Â
UC San Diego (4-4) struck early and never trailed, plating three runs in the first inning behind Trevian Martinez's three-run homer to left. The Tritons added single runs in the third and sixth innings and pushed across two more in the fourth to build a 7-2 cushion.
Â
Louisiana (7-3) outhit the Tritons, 10-9, but stranded eight runners and managed just one at-bat with a runner in scoring position over the final four innings.
Â
After falling behind, the Cajuns responded in the fourth. Rigoberto Hernandez singled to spark the rally before Lee Amedee doubled to left-center to put Louisiana on the board. Colt Brown followed with a double down the right-field line, trimming the deficit to 6-2.
Â
Louisiana added a run in the fifth when Donovan LaSalle doubled to left and scored on Maddox Mandino's RBI single to center, cutting the lead to 6-3. Louisiana threatened again in the inning with two more hits but was unable to capitalize further.
Â
UCSD tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Anthony Potestio, who finished 4-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases, extending the lead to 7-3.
Â
LaSalle paced Louisiana at the plate, finishing 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Hernandez added two hits for the Ragin' Cajuns, while Amedee and Brown each drove in a run as part of Louisiana's 10-hit effort.
Â
Ty Roman (0-2) took the loss for Louisiana after allowing six runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in five innings. Cole Flanagan – the third pitcher of the night for Louisiana – held the Tritons to one hit and striking out four over the final 3.2 innings.
Â
Steele Murdock (1-0) earned the win for UC San Diego, scattering nine hits and striking out seven over five innings. Devon King and Julian Cazares combined for four shutout innings in relief to close out the contest.
