Ragin' Cajuns return home to host 41st Louisiana Classics, March 9-10

HENDERSON, Nev. – UL's golf team put all five of its lineup players under par Wednesday and used that effort to claim runner-up honors in the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate Tournament at Reflection Bay Golf Club.

The Cajuns, who carded an 11-under in Tuesday's second round, came back with a nine-under 279 on Wednesday's final trip around the 7,261-yard par-72 layout and finished at 19-under 845 – their lowest 54-hole score of the year by seven strokes. Boise State led wire-to-wire in the three-day event and finished four shots ahead of UL at 23-undder 841.

Senior Malan Potgieter led the Cajuns for the second straight day and finished tied for third in the individual chase, adding a four-under 68 to his six-under 66 on Tuesday. The Kirkwood, South Africa, native and UL's leader in stroke average finished at 10-under 206.

UL had four other players go under par, marking the first time that had happened since the second round of the Ka'Anapali College Classic in 2023.

"To have five guys under par in the final round, playing in the final group, that says something," said Cajun coach Theo Sliman. "They didn't win, but they played well enough to win. They never quit, and that's something to be proud of."

Senior Jean Louis du Plessis and junior Carter Schmitt both had second straight two-under 70 scores, du Plessis finishing tied for 13th and Schmitt tied for 29th. Freshman James Holtsclaw, who led UL and was third individually after an opening 69 on Monday, had his first top-25 finish with a two-under 214 after a one-under 71 in Wednesday's final round.

Fellow freshman Drew Sliman, who struggled to a 79 in Monday's first round, turned in his second straight subpar round with a one-under 71.

"I'm really proud of our freshmen for producing good scores," coach Sliman said. "James got us off to a really good start Monday, and Drew bouncing back from that 79 was big for us. I let them know that those scores were important for us, to get a solid fifth score was something to be proud of."

Sun Belt Conference member Coastal Carolina finished tied for third with Northern Illinois, both at 17-under 847, while another Sun Belt member, Texas State, had the low round of the day at 15-under 273 and tied for fifth with UC San Diego and one more stroke back at 848.

The Cajuns will return home for their next outing and will welcome a 16-team field in their only home tournament of the year, with the 41st Louisiana Classics scheduled for March 9-10 at Oakbourne Country Club.
