Singles rally secures H-E-B Tournament of Champions title
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team erased a 3-0 match deficit with four consecutive singles victories to capture a 4-3 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions on Sunday, February 22 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
After dropping the doubles point and the first two singles decisions, Louisiana (5-3) responded with resilience.
Mason Landreth bounced back from a first-set loss to defeat Nicholas Niox, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1. Samuel Kyjaci added a straight-set win at No. 4, while Gianluca Filoramo outlasted Maxime Salesses in a three-set battle at No. 6.
The decisive point came at No. 5, where Darius Balan regrouped after dropping the opening set and rolled through the second before edging Josef Zapletal, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, to clinch the match – the third straight win for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11-2) had control early after claiming wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to go along with the doubles point, but Louisiana's depth and composure in three-set matches proved the difference in the three-hour contest.
Combined with a 4-0 sweep of New Mexico State on Saturday (Feb. 21), the Ragin' Cajuns finished 2-0 at the H-E-B Tournament of Champions and claimed the event title for the third consecutive season.
