UL nearly seizes doubles point, then pushes four courts into third sets
YOUNGSVILLE – The No. 75 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Men's Tennis team battled seventh-ranked LSU to the wire in doubles and pushed four singles courts to a decisive third set before falling, 6-1, on Thursday, February 26 at the Youngsville Sports Complex.
The nationally ranked matchup marked the Ragin' Cajuns first appearance in the Acadiana area this spring.
Louisiana (5-4) showed early fight in doubles play. After LSU claimed a 6-1 win at No. 2, the Cajuns answered at No. 3 with a 6-2 victory from Darius Balan and Gianluca Filoramo.
The doubles point came down to Court 1, where Mason Landreth and Leonard Tramolay forced a tiebreak before dropping a narrow 7-6 (7-3) decision. It took LSU's Sasa Markovic and Andrej Loncarevic rallying from a 5-2 deficit to prevent the Ragin' Cajuns from opening with a 1-0 match lead.
In singles, the Ragin' Cajuns extended the match across the lineup. Leonard Tramolay (No. 2), Samuel Kyjaci (No. 3), Darius Balan (No. 5) and Gianluca Filoramo (No. 6) all pushed their matches to three sets.
Balan put Louisiana on the scoreboard before the night finished, rallying for a 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) win at No. 5 in one of two matches decided by a final-set tiebreak. Filoramo nearly missed at making in back-to-back wins as LSU's Calin Stirb erased a 7-6 deficit in the third-set tiebreak on Court 6
Despite the final score, Louisiana tested the Tigers (12-2) throughout, forcing extended battles on four courts and nearly stealing the doubles point against one of the nation's top teams.
