Herrmann, Cajuns Dominate Maryland To Claim Series, 9-1
2/21/2026 7:13:00 PM | Baseball
Final game of the three-game series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
After rallying for four runs in the ninth inning of Friday's 7-6 win, Louisiana (4-2) needed late-game heroics on Saturday, scoring six unanswered runs to distance themselves early in the contest in winning its fourth straight game.
Steven Spalitta led off the inning when he drew a walk from Maryland starter Nic Morlang (0-2) and moved to third on Colt Brown's double down the left field line.
Lee Amedee then singled up the middle to plate both runners and give Louisiana a 2-0 lead.
Rigoberto Hernandez reached on an error past Maryland first baseman Paul Jones II, and Drew Markle added a bunt single to load the bases.
Maddox Mandino then delivered a two-run double down the right-field line to increase Louisiana's lead to 4-0 before Kasen Bellard delivered a sacrifice fly off reliever Andrew Koshy to cap the five-run outburst.
That was all Herrmann (1-0) would need as the senior allowed just a leadoff single by Braydon Martin in the fourth, before surrendering a leadoff homer in the seventh by Rylen Stockton.
Herrmann exited after striking out Aden Hill, finishing with seven strikeouts on the day.
Amedee's third RBI of the game increased the lead to 6-0 in the fifth. Hernandez socked a two-run homer to left off Terrapin reliever Steven Donigan in the seventh, and an Owen Galt single in the eighth completed the Cajuns' scoring.
Freshman Sawyer Pruitt pitched a shutout over the final 2.2 innings, his third straight outing without giving up an earned run.
Brown, Amedee and Markle each had two hits to spark the Cajuns' 11-hit attack. Amedee drove in three runs, while Mandino and Hernandez had two RBI apiece. Stockton had two hits for Maryland, who had just five hits in the contest.
Morlang took the loss after pitching 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs as Maryland (3-3) dropped its second straight game and fourth in five outings against Louisiana all-time.
The three-game series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. JR Tollett (1-0, 9.00 ERA) will get the start for Louisiana, while Maryland will counter with right-hander Jake Yeager (0-0, 2.25 ERA). The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
