Imani Daniel stars leading in scoring and establishing season-high points total again
TROY, Ala. – Imani Daniel scored a season-high in points a second straight game and the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team challenged Troy deep into the second half before the Trojans pulled away and captured a 71-55 win on Thursday, February 12 at Trojan Arena in Troy, Alabama.
Daniel scored a game-high 24 points, eclipsing the 21 points scored at Akron as her season-high total. The freshman forward knocked down 11-of-17 shots, converted a pair of free throws and hauled in six rebounds.
Led by 12 points from Daniel in the third quarter, the Ragin' Cajuns (3-22, 1-13 SBC) outscored Troy 18-13 in the period and dropped the Trojans' halftime lead down to single digits at 53-44 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Daniel scored eight points during a 10-0 run by Louisiana in the third quarter push, capped off by her fastbreak layup at 2:08 that trimmed the deficit to 48-44. The Trojans (20-5, 11-2 SBC) gained additional cushion by ending the third quarter with a 5-0 spurt.
The Ragin' Cajuns remained in striking distance early in the fourth quarter as Mikaylah Manley's basket off a Troy turnover at 7:45 and Amijah Price's layup at 6:33 closed the gap to 58-50.
Troy was able to shake off Louisiana by holding the visitors scoreless for the next five minutes. During the stretch, the Trojans scored 13 unanswered points to stretch the lead to 71-50 as the clock dipped under two minutes to play.
The game's ending mirrored how the Trojans created initial separation.
The Ragin' Cajuns pulled within one possession at the end of the first quarter after Stephanie Mosley's layup at 0:19 made it 20-17, but Troy started the second quarter on a 10-2 run kicked off by back-to-back triples from Leilani Guion and Emani Jenkins to forge ahead 30-19 by the midway point of the period.
Troy swept the season series from UL and increased its series lead to 23-14. The Ragin' Cajuns were denied the chance at a second consecutive road victory.
