Turnovers and ASU’s quick strikes on offensive end doom Louisiana
JONESBORO, Ark. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team steadily worked its way back into the game in the second quarter but its progress was disrupted in the second half and Arkansas State pulled away for a 75-34 victory on Thursday, January 15 at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
With scoring runs of 6-0 and 8-0 in the second quarter, the latter capped off by back-to-back Amijah Price three-pointers, the Ragin' Cajuns (1-16, 0-7 SBC) trimmed a 33-10 deficit down to 36-24 with 1:17 remaining before halftime.
Louisiana scored on the first possession of the second half following Imani Daniel's second-chance layup at 9:46 and the ASU lead stood at 40-26.
The Ragin' Cajuns could get no closer as the Red Wolves (15-4, 6-1 SBC) forced 21 turnovers the rest of the way which limited the visitors to eight points over the game's final 19 minutes.
ASU connected on seven triples in the second half starting with back-to-back makes over a 20-second span that quickly grew the lead back out to 20 points at 46-26 with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Red Wolves cemented the lofty margin with an eight-point run over a 21-second span in the seven-minute mark. Leading 54-32 as the clock dipped under eight minutes, an Aniyah Ruddock three-pointer was followed by a steal that led to layup from Bella Weary which was followed by an offensive rebound after a missed free throw that led to Weary making a triple at 7:36 to extend the lead to 62-32.
The sequence was the start of a game-ending 21-2 run by ASU after a Lily Ba fastbreak layup at 8:12. Louisiana converted just one more basket the rest of the way – a Stephanie Mosley paint bucket at 3:22 – as the Red Wolves pressure defense went on to force 16 Ragin' Cajuns miscues in the final stanza.
Thursday's contest marked the start of the annual season series between the two long-time foes in a series that dates back to 1983. The Red Wolves visit the Cajundome on February 21.
ASU, which swept the season series last year, extended its series win streak to three straight games. UL remained winless in Sun Belt play.
