ATLANTA – Andrew Herrmann scattered eight hits and recorded his third quality start of the season while Luke Yuhasz and Caleb Stelly homered in a three-run fourth inning as Louisiana claimed a rain-soaked 8-3 Sun Belt Conference victory over Georgia State on Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The final game of the three-game series is scheduled for Sunday at noon CT. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Louisiana (24-24, 14-9 SBC), which won for the seventh time in its last 10 games, led 1-0 after three innings before scoring six runs over its next two frames in earning its 10th straight win over Georgia State (24-24, 9-14 SBC) dating back to 2018.
Herrmann (3-3), pitching near his hometown of Kennesaw, Ga., struck out six and allowed a pair of earned runs in 7.0 innings on the mound before being lifted for Matthew Holzhammer after GSU's first three hitters reached base. The southpaw retired his first seven batters before Nick Garagozzo reached on a one-out single in the third inning.
The Ragin' Cajuns manufactured their first run off GSU starter Jake Hembree (1-2) in the third inning when Maddox Mandino drew a one-out walk, stole second and third, and scored on Drew Markle's fielder's choice.
Yuhasz, whose three-run home run on Friday helped lead the Ragin' Cajuns to a 10-5 win, collected Louisiana's first hit when he led off the fourth inning with a solo home run. Conor Higgs followed with a double off Hembree and Stelly would deliver a two-run blast to give Louisiana a 4-0 lead.
Louisiana added three more runs in the fifth – all coming with two outs – to stretch its lead to 7-0. Higgs' infield single to third allowed Mandino to score before Lee Amedee hit an RBI single to right and Higgs would score on an attempted double steal.
Stelly, who finished 2-for-3 and recorded his first career multi-homer game, gave Louisiana an 8-2 lead in the eighth when he hit a solo blast to left off GSU reliever Tysen Benford.
Markle and Higgs each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double for Louisiana with Mandino going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases. Holzhammer, who retired all six batters he faced, fanned three consecutive batters after replacing Herrmann in the eighth before retiring the Panthers in order in the ninth.
Carter Bailey led GSU at the plate going 2-for-4 with Jesse Donohoe hitting a solo home run. Hembree took the loss for the Panthers after scattering three hits and allowing six runs in 4.0 innings of play.
