ATLANTA – Tate Hess struck out a career-high 10 batters in 5.1 innings of scoreless relief and Louisiana got back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third inning from Luke Yuhasz, Conor Higgs and Lee Amedee to erase an early deficit and defeat Georgia State, 10-5, in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference series on Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
The series resumes on Saturday with an 11 a.m. CT start. The game, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, was moved up due to the forecast of inclement weather in the Atlanta area. The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Hess (6-2) scattered three hits and walked three batters after replacing starter Chase Morgan in the fourth. The right-hander issued a walk to his first batter before getting a grounder to second to help preserve a 7-5 lead.
Louisiana (23-24, 13-9 SBC) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning as Georgia State (24-23, 9-13 SBC) got a one-out RBI double from Jesse Donohoe to plate Kaleb Freeman before Colin Hynek scored on a wild pitch.
The Ragin' Cajuns would cut into the deficit in the second when Owen Galt laced a single to left to drive in Caleb Stelly before taking the lead for good in the third.
Brooks Wright led off the inning when he was hit by a pitch from GSU starter Caleb White (5-5) before Drew Markle reached on a walk. Yuhasz followed with a three-run homer to left to give Louisiana a 4-2 lead before Higgs followed with his 15th home run of the season for a 5-2 lead.
Two pitches later, Amedee belted his second homer of the season with a blast to right field to chase White after 2.0 innings of work.
Georgia State closed to within 7-5 in the bottom half of the inning, beginning with Hynek's SBC-leading 18th home run of the season before a sacrifice fly by Cole Griffith plated Michael Maginnis and a wild pitch allowed Cooper Milford to score from third.
Louisiana took advantage of a pair of GSU errors in the fifth to score three unearned runs to break the game open beginning when Freeman bobbled a potential inning-ending grounder at second to allow Galt to score for an 8-5 lead.
Higgs, who finished 2-for-5 and moved into a tie for fifth-place in school history in home runs (33), then followed with a two-run single through the right side off GSU reliever Brian Crooms and allowing Wright and Yuhasz to score for a 10-5 lead.
Maddox Mandino had two hits, including a triple, as eight players had at least one hit for the game. Higgs and Amedee had two hits apiece for the Ragin' Cajuns, who stranded 11 runners on base.
Freeman had two hits, including a ninth-inning triple for Georgia State, while White suffered the loss after allowing six runs on five hits in 2.0 innings. Crooms struck out seven batters in 5.0 innings of relief for the Panthers while allowing four runs, including three unearned.
