Louisiana (25-26, 15-11 SBC) scored first on Jose Torres' RBI single in the second inning before USM (37-13, 20-6 SBC) scored six runs over the next two frames. The Ragin' Cajuns closed to within 6-3 when Lucas hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer to drive in Lee Amedee.
The Ragin' Cajuns closed to within 6-5 in the sixth after Brooks Wright led off with a single and scored on Stelly's homer just inside the left-field foul pole to chase USM starter Matthew Adams (5-2).
Southern Miss put the game away in the bottom half of the sixth with seven runs – all with two outs – and beginning with a two-out, bases-loaded walk to Carson Paetow. Joey Urban followed with a two-run single to give USM a 9-5 lead before scoring three more times in a bases-loaded walk and a pair of hit batters.
Adams scattered seven hits and allowed five runs in earning the win for Southern Miss with Colby Allen pitching the final 1.2 innings to earn his 10th save. Drey Barrett drove in four runs, including a walk-off, two-run double for the Golden Eagles with Matthew Russo hitting a two-run homer in the second.
Chase Morgan (4-2) suffered the loss for Louisiana, striking out five batters and allowing five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings. Lucas and Stelly each collected two hits for Louisiana with Amedee recording his team-high 18th double of the season.
