Cajuns Not Able To Finish Job In 4-3 Loss To Georgia Southern

Louisiana strands 11 runners on base as seven-game win streak to Eagles snapped

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana built a 3-0 lead through the first three innings, but Georgia Southern answered with four runs in a two-inning span to rally for a 4-3 win in the finale of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series on Sunday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

Carter DeGondea (4-0) pitched the final 6.1 innings to earn the victory in relief for Georgia Southern (24-20, 10-12 SBC), which snapped a seven-game losing streak to Louisiana (22-24, 12-9 SBC) dating back to 2022.

Louisiana was limited to six hits and stranded 11 runners on base – including twice with the bases loaded. The Ragin' Cajuns scored a run in the first three innings, beginning with Drew Markle's sacrifice fly in the first to plate Maddox Mandino.

The Ragin' Cajuns added a run in the second inning when Owen Galt was hit by a pitch, stole both second and third, and scored on Carson Hepworth's squeeze bunt. Louisiana took a 3-0 lead in the third after Markle led off with a single off Georgia Southern starter Joey White, moved to third on Conor Higgs' one-out single to right and scored three batters later when Jose Torres drew a bases-loaded walk.

White, who pitched 2.2 innings and allowed three runs, was replaced by DeGondea, who got Galt to hit a soft liner to short to leave the bases loaded.

Georgia Southern began to chip away at the lead in the fourth when Kade Parker led off the inning with solo home down the left-field line. The Eagles scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead after loading the bases against Louisiana starter JR Tollett (4-4).

Daniel Haab drew a one-out walk and moved to second when Sean White beat out a close play at first for a single. The Eagles loaded the bases when JD Kaiser was hit by a pitch and J.C. Peacher's fielder's choice scored Haab to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Parker, who went 3-for-4 at the plate after entering with a .216 average, then drilled a two-out double to the center-field wall and allowing both White and Peacher to put Georgia Southern ahead.

DeGondea allowed a fifth-inning double to Luke Yuhasz to lead off the inning before retiring his next six batters. Mandino led off the seventh with a bunt single and moved to second on a walk before being thrown out at third for the first time in 11 stolen base attempts.

Louisiana would load the bases as a walk to Yuhasz and a hit batter by DeGondea – one of six hit batters issued by the Eagles – gave the Ragin' Cajuns a chance to get back into the game before a grounder to first left the bases loaded.

Mandino led off the ninth inning for Louisiana when he was hit by a pitch, before being thrown out at second on Markle's fielder's choice. DeGondea then got Yuhasz to line out to Parker for the second out, and Higgs would follow with a bloop double down the left-field line to put the winning run in scoring position.

One pitch after Caleb Stelly barely missed a potential game-winning home run to right, DeGondea got Stelly to fly out to right to seal the win.

White and Josh Tate each had two hits for Georgia Southern. Haab went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Eagles.

Tollett pitched 6.1 innings for Louisiana – his sixth straight game with six-plus innings on the mound – but had his string of quality starts snapped at five after allowing four runs on seven hits. Blake McGehee pitched the final 2.2 innings for Louisiana and allowed one hit with a pair of strikeouts.

Yuhasz and Higgs had two hits each to lead the Ragin' Cajuns, whose six hits were recorded by the top four hitters in the lineup.

Louisiana will head out on the road for its next two weekends beginning on Friday (May 2) in a three-game series at Georgia State. The Ragin' Cajuns will then close out the road schedule May 9-11 at Southern Miss before closing out the regular season against Arkansas State on May 15-17.
