Bulldogs Use Big Innings To Defeat Cajuns In Midweek, 16-6

Mexico and Zeb Ruddell hit back-to-back homers in the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit before Louisiana Tech (18-12) scored four runs in the fourth to build a 7-3 lead. Matt Houston was 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Bulldogs while Will Safford was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Louisiana (15-16) took a 1-0 lead in the first as Carson Hepworth scored from third after an errant pickoff throw to first by Bulldog starter Kade Parker. Blake McGehee earned the start for the Ragin' Cajuns and tossed a pair of scoreless innings before Louisiana Tech took a 3-1 lead I the third.
The Ragin' Cajuns countered in the third with a pair of runs as Hepworth hit an RBI double to left before Caleb Stelly scored on a throwing error.
Louisiana Tech loaded the bases in the fourth off Ragin' Cajuns reliever Matt Gaither (0-1) before Garrison Berkley cleared the bases with a double to left-center. Michael Ballard then reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Berkley to score from third and give the Bulldogs a 7-3 lead.
Casey Artigues scored on a throwing error in the fourth for the Ragin' Cajuns, but the Bulldogs scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings before a four-run seventh helped build a 15-4 lead.
Conor Higgs and Clayton Pourciau had two hits each to lead Louisiana while Brooks Wright added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the seventh.
Luke Nichols (3-3) earned the victory for Louisiana Tech after allowing one hit and an unearned run in 3.0 innings of work. Gaither allowed three runs and walked two in 0.1 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns.
Louisiana will return to action beginning Friday when it hosts Texas State in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. before Sunday's finale at 1.
All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to each game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
