Cajuns Rally Falls Short As ODU Earns Walk-Off 6-5 Win

NORFOLK, Va. – Evan Holman's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning brought in Kyle Edwards as Old Dominion withstood another late Louisiana rally and earned a 6-5 Sun Belt Conference victory on Friday at Harbor Park.
The final game of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at noon CT. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
After battling through a scoreless duel through the first three innings, Old Dominion (13-23, 8-9 SBC) broke through with a two-out rally to record a four-run fourth. Tanner Schaedel beat out an infield single to drive in Kyle Edwards for a 1-0 lead before Kainen Jorge's single to left would eventually drive in Schaedel.
After a Louisiana error, ODU added two more runs on Luke Water's RBI single to right to give the Monarchs their second big lead in as many days.
Louisiana, which chipped away at a 5-2 deficit on Thursday for a 6-5 victory, closed the gap in the fifth when Carson Hepworth reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Lee Amedee's double off the glove of Brody Connors.
ODU chased starter Andrew Herrmann after 5.1 innings and would take a 5-1 lead when Edwards was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Jorge.
The Cajun offense responded once again in the seventh. Conner Higgs singled to open the inning and walks to Hepworth and Amedee loaded the bases before Luke Yuhasz hit a two-run single off ODU reliever Hunter Baynes to close the gap to 5-3.
Louisiana tied the game in the eighth after Owen Galt reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Caleb Stelly and Higgs drew walks to load the bases, a wild pitch would score Galt before Amedee tied the game at 5-5 with a two-out infield single.
The Ragin' Cajuns put a pair of runners on base in the ninth as Galt reached on a fielder's choice and Stelly singled to right. ODU reliever Alex Hunt (3-0), who threw four pitches to earn the win, would come in and get a strikeout.
ODU would take advantage of a throwing error by Dylan Theut (0-1), allowing Edwards to reach first to lead off the ninth before moving to second on Connor's sacrifice bunt. After Maverick Stallings was intentionally walked to set up a potential double play, Schaedel lifted a fly ball to right to allow Edwards to advance to third before Holman hit an 0-and-1 pitch to center to seal the win for the Monarchs.
Amedee and Maddox Mandino had two hits each to lead Louisiana. Herrmann scattered eight hits and four runs – two unearned – for the Ragin' Cajuns while Theut pitched 2.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Waters went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI for ODU while Jorge and Edwards each scored twice. Starter Dylan Brown, the SBC leader in strikeouts entering the game, fanned eight batters and scattered six hits in 6.0 innings for the Monarchs.
