Conor Higgs and Carson Hepworth each drove in two runs while Louisiana (18-22, 9-7 SBC) scored twice in the ninth inning to rally to force extra innings for the second time in the past three games and rally from a 5-2 deficit.
The second game of the series will be played on Friday at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the first after Higgs drove in Luke Yuhasz with an RBI single through the left side before ODU (12-23, 7-9 SBC) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on Kyle Edwards' two-out single to center.
ODU scored three times in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead as Edwards delivered a two-run single and Maverick Stallings doubled to left.
The Mavericks loaded the bases in the fourth inning with three straight infield singles and chased Louisiana starter Chase Morgan after 3.1 innings. Hess (4-2) came in and fanned two of his career-high tying seven batters in the fourth, sandwiched around a walk to Stallings to increase the Monarch lead to 5-2.
Louisiana began to chip away at the lead in the sixth as Higgs singled and Owen Galt hit a one-out double before Jose Torres' RBI grounder off ODU starter Ben Moore closed the gap to 5-3.
After leading the bases loaded in the seventh and retired in order in the eighth, Louisiana broke through to tie the game with two runs in the ninth off Monarch closer Bailey Matala. Maddox Mandino led off with a single and moved to second when Lee Amedee drew a walk.
Mandino would steal third to put runners on the corners before a pitch hit Markle to load the bases. Two batters later, Higgs was hit by a pitch to plate Mandino before Hepworth's sacrifice fly would bring home Amedee.
Torres led off the 10th inning with a single for Louisiana off ODU's Kellen Davis (0-3) before Collins was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Casey Artigues. Collins advanced to third on Mandino's ground back to the mound and Markle would follow two batters later with a chopper over ODU third baseman Brody Connors to give Louisiana the lead.
Holzhammer closed out the contest for Louisiana as he pitched a scoreless 10th to earn his third save of the season. Hess pitched 5.2 innings for the Ragin' Cajuns in earning his third straight win.
