Louisiana Drops Series Finale at ULM, 3-2

Ragin' Cajuns close out roadtrip beginning Thursday at Old Dominion

MONROE – Isaiah Walker's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and ULM held on to claim a 3-2 win over Louisiana in the finale of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series on Sunday at Lou St. Amant Field.

Brennan Eager and Zac Shaw combined to scatter six hits and 14 groundball outs in helping ULM (18-19, 5-10 SBC) to its second straight one-run win and claim its first SBC series over Louisiana (17-22, 8-7 SBC) since 2012.

The Ragin' Cajuns took a 1-0 lead in the first when Luke Yuhasz doubled on the first pitch to left, moved to third on a grounder and scored on Caleb Stelly's RBI grounder to short. The would be short-lived as a leadoff single in the second inning by Henry Garcia Jr., and two-run homer to left by Colby Lunsford gave ULM a 2-1 lead.

Louisiana tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth after Stelly and Lee Amedee led off the inning with base hits before Stelly would score on Maddox Mandino's RBI grounder to short. The Ragin' Cajuns missed an opportunity in the fifth after Connor Cuff led off the inning with a single before being retired on the first of two double plays turned by the Warhawks.

Yuhasz drew a two-out walk before Conor Higgs hit a ground-rule double which bounced over the right-center field wall. Eager would settle down and get Stelly to ground out to second to end the threat.

Louisiana managed two base runners after Higgs' double – an error which allowed Yuhasz to reach first in the eighth and Stelly drawing a one-out walk. Shaw would then force an inning-ending double play to halt a second Cajuns' scoring threat.

ULM would break the deadlock in the seventh as Michelle Artzberger hit a leadoff single to left off Louisiana starter JR Tollett (3-3) and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Walker hit the first pitch off Ragin' Cajuns reliever Riley Marcotte for a single to right and allowing Artzberger to score the go-ahead run.

Tollett recorded his fourth consecutive quality start for Louisiana tossing 6.1 innings and scattering seven hits. Marcotte pitched the final 1.2 innings with a strikeout for Louisiana while Yuhasz went 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk.

Walker and Barham White had two hits apiece for ULM while Shaw (3-0) earned the victory with 3.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts. Eager, making his first start in SBC play, pitched 6.0 innings and allowed six hits with two runs.

Louisiana closes out a seven-game roadtrip beginning on Thursday (April 17) when it travels to Norfolk, Va., to face Old Dominion in a three-game series.
