MOBILE – Conor Higgs belted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs while JR Tollett notched a quality start on the mound with 6.0 shutout innings as Louisiana set the tone early and defeated South Alabama, 9-3, to claim the Sun Belt Conference series between the schools on Sunday at Stanky Field.
Lee Amedee went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs as Louisiana (11-14, 3-3 Sun Belt) used a five-run, first inning to claim the early lead before building an 8-0 cushion after four.
Amedee gave Louisiana a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning when his one-out double to right-center off USA starter Chase Davis (1-2) plated Mark Collins and Caleb Stelly. Amedee moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored when USA shortstop Ty Brooks bobbled Jose Torres' grounder.
After Torres stole second, Higgs hit his eighth homer of the season with a blast to right-center to chase Davis and give Louisiana a 5-0 lead.
Higgs, who finished 2-for-3 at the plate and moved into a three-way tie for the SBC lead in home runs, belted his ninth of the season in the third when he hit a solo shot to left-center off USA reliever Dalton Brooks.
The Ragin' Cajuns added two more runs in the fourth when Amedee singled up the middle to drive in Owen Galt before Higgs' sacrifice fly on the right-field warning track scored Stelly.
Tollett (2-2) scattered eight hits and struck out five in recording Louisiana's second quality start of the season and first since Andrew Herrmann's complete-game victory over Nebraska on February 22.
The right-hander forced nine groundball outs in his third career start and was aided by an inning-ending double play in the first after USA (11-12, 1-5 Sun Belt) got base hits from John Smith and Kyle Morrison.
South Alabama threatened in the third inning after putting runners on the corners with two outs, but Tollett would get a strikeout to end the frame before retiring the Jaguars in order in the fourth.
Louisiana, which finished with 12 hits and left 12 runners on base, loaded the bases in the eighth before a Brian Garmon pitch would hit Higgs to score Galt.
Tate Hess pitched the final 3.0 innings to record his first career save for Louisiana. Pinch-hitters Mike Young and Ryan Storey would account for South Alabama's runs in the ninth as Young recorded an RBI single and Storey a two-run double.
Stelly finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored for Louisiana with Galt going 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Carson Hepworth went 2-for-5 for the Ragin' Cajuns, who claimed their fourth straight weekend series over South Alabama.
Smith led South Alabama at the plate with a 5-for-5 (all singles) performance. Morrison finished 2-for-5 at the plate for the Jaguars while Davis allowed four earned runs before being relieved after one-third of an inning.
Louisiana will close out its five-game roadtrip on Tuesday when it travels to Baton Rouge to face nationally-ranked LSU at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on SEC Network Plus.
