The Ragin’ Cajuns won 21 events over two days

LAFAYETTE - The Louisiana track and field team had a monster Saturday at the Louisiana Classics, setting three program records and a facility record in a dominating performance at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex.

Isabelle Russell started the day with a school and facility record in the 5000m, clocking in a time of 16:52.56. She shattered the previous school record of 17:18.19 set by Sophie Daigle in 2022 and the facility record of 17:04.76 set in 2006 by Diana Jipchirchir of New Orleans.

Joe Patterson became the record holder in the 1500m, breaking Gervy Papion's time of 3:46.40 set in 1982. The senior just beat it by running a 3:46.29.

Lily Murray raised her school record in the hammer with a throw of 191-8/58.44m. Kimola Hines joined Murray as the only women in school history with a throw of over 180 feet, moving to third in the hammer at 180-8/54.88m.

Marin Barras recorded another entry into the hammer top-10 with a throw of 173-2/52.80m, moving her into sixth with a personal best. Barras also had the third-best shot put in program history at 46-1.25/14.05m. Laila Guy also jumped up the record board in the shot put, moving to fourth with a throw of 45-9.75/13.96m.

Louisiana ended up with 12 new entries to the women's record book and three to the men's.

After setting the school record at last year's Classics, the women capped the day with the second-fastest 4x800m relay. Russell joined Skylar Delgado, Caroline Spalitta, and Ella Segura, who were part of the record-setting team, to run a time of 9:21.75. Segura had a terrific individual performance in the women's 1500m, running the fourth-fastest time at 4:33.43.

Both the men's and women's 4x100m relays had the third-fastest times by Louisiana. The women's quartet of Jaala Thymes, Amairi Ashford, Quincy Simon, and Chaniqua Tonge's time of 44.74 has them less than half a second from the record. For the men, Chris Gravois, Mark Daley, Caemon Scott, and Lawson Jacobs ran a time of 39.46. The three fastest men's 4x100m relay times have all been set in the last three seasons after the record stood since 1972.

Other entries into the record books included Oliver Jack's fifth-best hammer throw with a distance of 188-9/57.53m. Ashford ran the 100m in 11.54 to move to sixth in program history. Alaysha Veal is now eighth in the high jump at 5-8.75/1.75m and Shenell Tucker had the ninth-fastest 400m hurdles at 1:00.86, just missing becoming the fourth woman in school history to finish in under one minute.

Louisiana claimed 19 events on the day. Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, Lawson Jacobs won the 200m with a time of 21.05, just edging out the indoor champion Mark Daley's time of 21.14 and Camren Hardy's 21.21. Juliana Couville won the 800m, finishing in 2:16.35. Louden Boudreaux won the 5000m at 15:05.96.

Reem Tammam's jump of 19-2/5.84m won her the event's long jump while the men's triple jump was claimed by Jeremy Nelson at 51-10.5/15.81m. The final individual winner was Federico Bovo in the pole vault after clearing 14-5.25/4.40m.

The Cajuns swept the six relays on the day. The women, Simon, Evalyn Abdmoulaie, Tucker, and Alexandra Johnson, won the 4x400m at 3:48.62, while the men, Jonathan Gamarra, Daley, Scott, and Jacobs finished in 3:11.45. The men's team of Boudreaux, Peyton Bourgeois, Matthew Maynard, and Mason Haley took the 4x800m at 8:08.25.

Louisiana is back in action at the Texas State Bobcat Relays beginning March 27.
