Morgan Returns As Louisiana Beats South Alabama, 7-1

MOBILE, Ala. – Chase Morgan pitched 4.0 shutout innings in his first appearance on the mound in three weeks while freshman Owen Galt had three hits to lead a 10-hit attack as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns defeated South Alabama, 7-1, in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference series on Friday at Stanky Field.
The series continues on Saturday in a 2 p.m. contest before concluding on Sunday at 1. All games in the series are being streamed live on ESPN+ with fans in the Lafayette area able to listen to all games on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Andrew Herrmann pitched the final 5.0 innings to earn his first save of the year as Louisiana (10-13, 2-2 Sun Belt) earned its first road win of the season in six games.
Morgan (2-1), making his first appearance since February 28 against UC Irvine, scattered three hits and struck out four in a pre-determined start. The left-hander retired South Alabama (10-11, 0-4 Sun Belt) in order in the first before allowing a walk and two-out single in the second.
South Alabama threatened in the third after a one-out triple and a pair of two-out walks loaded the bases, but Morgan would strike out Mike Young to keep the Jaguars off the board.
Louisiana picked up a run in the first off USA starter Zach Willingham (2-3) when Conor Higgs reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on Caleb Stelly's single through the right side and scored on Galt's bunt single up the third-base line.
Galt, who finished 3-for-4 with a career-best four RBI at the plate, gave Louisiana a 3-0 lead in the fifth when he chopped a two-out double down the left-field line off Willingham to score Mark Collins and Higgs. Collins led off the inning with an infield single to second before a pair of walks to Higgs and Stelly gave Galt his two-out opportunity.
A double by Stelly and bunt single by Galt in the eighth would chase Willingham, who entered the game with a 1.93 ERA, and Jose Torres would greet reliever John Gillis with a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead.
Louisiana scored three runs in the ninth after loading the bases in the ninth, taking advantage of a couple of hit batters and Sam Ardoin's infield single to plate Higgs.
Herrmann allowed five hits and struck out three in earning his first career save. The left-hander retired the side in the eighth inning and kept the Jaguars off the board until John Smith's two-out single through the left side in the ninth scored Lucas Ismaili.

Willingham allowed eight hits and struck out seven in a 7.0 inning-performance for the Jags, who lost at home for the third time in 11 contests. Ismaili led the Jaguars at the plate with three hits while Smith was 2-for-5.
