Cajuns Unable To Maintain Hot Start In 12-5 Loss to UC Irvine

Will Bermudez and Chase Call each belted three-run homers while Rowen Felsch and Jacob McCombs each went deep as UCI (8-3), which won its fifth straight game, recorded 13 hits with seven going for extra bases. All-America candidate Anthony Martinez, playing in his third game of the season, added a pair of hits and drove in two runs in helping the Anteaters to the non-conference sweep.
After a pair of three-run losses in the first two games of the series, Louisiana (5-7) came out aggressive as it took a 4-0 lead in the second inning off UCI starter Trevor Hansen (1-0). Conor Higgs led off the inning with a double before scoring from third two batters later on Connor Cuff's sacrifice fly to left.
Jose Torres' RBI single to right plated Stelly for a 2-0 lead before a sacrifice bunt by Sam Ardoin was thrown away, allowing Lee Amedee and Torres to score for a 4-0 advantage.
The Anteaters cut into the lead in the bottom of the second when Bermudez's two-out homer to center scored Zach Fjelsted and Zach Crandall. After Stelly's solo homer in the third gave Louisiana a 5-3 lead, UC Irvine would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning when Felsch's two-out home run to right-center off Cajuns starter Andrew Herrmann (1-1) scored McCombs.
A two-out walk in the fourth inning would chase Herrmann and Martinez's two-run double to right would give a 7-5 lead.
Louisiana, which stranded a season-high 11 runners on base, had two scoring opportunities thwarted after leaving the bases loaded in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Hansen pitched 5.2 innings and struck out eight in earning the win for UC Irvine. McCombs and Crandall had three hits each to lead the Anteaters with Bermudez driving in four runs.
Amedee led Louisiana at the plate going 3-for-4 with a walk. Stelly was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Ragin' Cajuns while Herrmann took the loss after going 3.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Louisiana will begin a nine-game homestand beginning on Ash Wednesday (March 5) when it faces UNC Wilmington (7-5) in a 6 p.m. contest at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
