Drew Markle scores on a sixth-inning error in a 6-5 win over UNCW

Louisiana Takes Advantage of UNCW Miscues In 6-5 Win

Ragin' Cajuns continue homestand on Friday in three-game series against Dallas Baptist

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana scored a pair of runs off a pair of passed balls by UNCW in the first inning before rallying to score three times in the sixth off a pair of Seahawk errors to claim a 6-5 win on Wednesday at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

Luke Yuhasz broke out of a 4-for-27 slump with a pair of hits, including a 443-foot blast to left center in the second inning as Louisiana (6-7) opened its first of two nine-game homestands by snapped a three-game losing streak.

Maddox Mandino (1-0), one of 10 pitchers used by Louisiana in its first-ever matchup with fellow 2024 NCAA Regional participant UNCW (7-6), earned his first career victory after facing two batters with a strikeout in the sixth inning.

UNCW need four pitches to take a 1-0 lead when Kevin Jones homered to left field off Ragin' Cajuns starter Tate Hess before Tanner Thach followed with a single to right. Hess, who pitched 3.0 innings with four strikeouts, would get out of the early jam with a pair of strikeouts and a grounder to third.

Louisiana would take a 2-1 lead without the benefit of a hit in the bottom half of the first beginning when Casey Artigues drew a one-out walk before Lee Amedee was hit by a pitch with two outs. The duo would move into scoring position on a wild pitch and Artigues would tie the game on a passed ball.

A second passed ball would allow Amedee to score and give Louisiana its first lead of the night before chasing UNCW starter Khris Morris after loading the bases.

An RBI single by Aidan Evans in the top of the second tied the game at 2-2 for the Seahawks before Yuhasz put the Ragin' Cajuns ahead, 3-2, with his first homer of the season.

UNCW added a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth to reclaim the lead at 4-3 before Louisiana would capitalize on two Seahawks errors in the sixth.

Drew Markle led off the inning on a bunt single and reached second when Conor Higgs' flyball to left was dropped for an error. Jose Torres' sacrifice bunt was fielded by reliever Ty Lawson (0-1), whose throw to third got past Trevor Lucas and allowing Markle to score and tie the contest.

Connor Cuff then followed with a two-run single to right to put Louisiana back up for good.

James Trimble and JR Tollett each retired UNCW in order in their respective inning of relief for Louisiana before UNCW threatened in the ninth.

A pair of walks and Alec DeMartino's RBI double to left closed the gap to 6-5 before Alex Rosario got a flyball to shallow right and Riley Marcotte would get the final two outs to record his first career save.

Mandino, a two-way player making his fourth career appearance on the mound, needed 13 pitches to post his first career victory as he got out of a jam in the sixth striking out DeMartino before Evans was thrown out at third attempting to advance on a ball in the dirt.

Jones, Lucas and Evans each had two hits for UNCW, which held a 12-5 advantage in hits and stranded 11 runners on base. Lawson, the third of four Seahawk pitchers used in the game, allowed three runs (two unearned) and struck out two in 2.0 innings of relief.

Cooper Allen pitched 3.1 innings in relief for the Seahawks, striking out four and allowing Yuhasz's homer. Baker Cox pitched the final 2.0 innings for UNCW and fanned two batters while allowing one hit.

Louisiana will continue its homestand beginning on Friday when it hosts No. 21-ranked Dallas Baptist (9-3) in a three-game series. First pitch is at 6 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
