Ragin' Cajuns head to Mobile to face South Alabama in three-game series
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana belted a pair of two-run home runs in the second inning before TJ Salvaggio added a solo blast in the eighth inning as the Lions claimed a 7-1 win over Louisiana on Wednesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Ben Robichaux and Ryan Brome each homered early for SLU (17-3), which added two runs in the sixth on RBIs by Dane Watts and Brome.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the second when Robichaux hit a one-out homer to right-center off Louisiana starter Aidan Grab (0-1). Brome would add his 10th homer of the season three batters later when his hit down the right-field line with two outs went off the foul pole.
Luke Lirette (1-1) earned the win for SLU after pitching 2.0 hitless innings with a strikeout. Louisiana (9-13) was limited to one runner on base through the first two innings – a one-out walk to Conor Higgs in the first – before Caleb Stelly recorded the Ragin' Cajuns first hit with a double in the third.
Grab, a Madisonville, La., native and former Mandeville High product, pitched 1.2 innings in his first career start for Louisiana (9-13) and scattered four hits with a strikeout. Maddox Mandino posted career-bests in innings pitched (2.0) and strikeouts (3) for Louisiana with Parker Smith pitching a scoreless inning in relief.
Louisiana averted its first shutout to the Lions since 1985 when Higgs belted his seventh homer of the season – a 427-foot blast to center field in the eighth inning. Mark Collins added a pinch-hit single in the ninth for the Ragin' Cajuns
