Louisiana Defeats No. 21 Troy In Sunday Slugfest, 18-14

Teams combine for fourth-most runs in Russo Park history
True freshmen Owen Galt and Brooks Wright had three hits each with Wright finishing 3-for-3 with a bases-clearing triple in part of a seven-run sixth inning for Louisiana (9-12, 1-2 Sun Belt), which posted season-highs in both runs and hits.
The combined 32 runs in the game were the most at Russo Park since Louisiana claimed a 19-16 win over Little Rock in the opening game of the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championships. The slugfest marked the fifth time in the stadium's history in which teams combined for 30-plus runs.
Troy (15-5, 2-1 Sun Belt) had its first four batters of the game reach base in scoring four runs beginning when Steven Meier homered to left field for a 1-0 lead. Brooks Bryan would follow with an RBI single to drive in Sean Darnell before RBI grounders by Mike Bello and Houston Markham.
Luke Yuhasz would help the Ragin' Cajuns gradually chip away at the lead in the bottom of the first when he hit the first pitch from Troy starter Drew Nelson for a towering 443-foot homer to left.
The Ragin' Cajuns would add an unearned run in the second on Griffin Hebert's sacrifice fly to score Carson Hepworth before Yuhasz scored on a wild pitch and Jose Torres' sacrifice fly in the third cut the deficit to 6-4.
Louisiana loaded the bases in the fourth inning as Galt singled to left, Hebert drew a walk and Wright laid down a bunt on the third-base line off Troy reliever Adam Falinski (0-3). After Yuhasz hit a sacrifice fly to center, Higgs hit a three-run homer to center – the 15th of the season and first with runners on base – to put Louisiana ahead, 8-6.
The Ragin' Cajuns added a run in the fifth when Hepworth scored from third on a passed ball before sending 10 men to the plate and scoring all of their runs with two outs in the sixth to take a 16-7 lead.
Hepworth reached on a fielder's choice on a potential inning-ending double play before a single by Galt and walk to Hebert loaded the bases. Wright then tripled off Brock Tapper before Stelly followed three batters later when he homered to left off Trojans reliever Grady Gorgen.
Troy would respond with seven unanswered runs beginning in the seventh on Bryan's solo homer to left before a sacrifice fly by Jakob Wax and two-run double by Meier. The Trojans cut the deficit to 16-14 with three runs in the eighth as Gavin Schrader hit a two-run double to center and Jimmy Janicki followed with an RBI double to left.
Freshman Matt Osteen, the fourth pitcher of the game for Louisiana, proceeded to get out of the jam when he got Wax looking at a called third strike to end the inning before keeping Troy off the board in the ninth to record his first career save.
Lee Amedee helped seal the win for Louisiana when his two-out double to center would score Wright and Higgs.
Blake McGehee (2-3) earned the win for Louisiana after tossing 4.0 innings of relief with a strikeout. Tate Hess scattered five hits for the Ragin' Cajuns and struck out three before Andrew Herrmann and Osteen pitched the final 2.0 innings with an earned run allowed.
Meier went 4-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored for Troy, which recorded 16 hits. Schrader drove in three runs for the Trojans while pinch-hitter Janicki had a single and RBI double in two plate appearances.
Falinski took the loss for Troy after allowing four hits and three runs in 1.0 innings of relief. Tapper gave up five runs and walked three in 1.2 innings for the Trojans while Nelson scattered four hits and allowed six runs (five earned) before being pulled in the fourth.
Louisiana will open a five-game roadtrip beginning on Wednesday when it travels to Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana in a 6 p.m. contest. The Ragin' Cajuns will then travel for a three-game series at South Alabama before wrapping up the road swing on Tuesday (March 25) at No. 1-ranked LSU.
