Junior wins in sudden death playoff to become first Cajun to claim medalist honors

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Malan Potgieter overcame a double bogey on the final hole in regulation and defeated LSU's Alfons Bondesson on the third hole in a sudden death playoff to lead the Ragin' Cajuns during the final day of the Louisiana Classics on Tuesday at Oakbourne Country Club.

Potgieter finished at 9-under-207 to become the first Ragin' Cajun to claim medalist honors in the 40th edition of the tournament.

As a team, Louisiana posted a final round score of even-par 288 to finish at 857 for the 54-hole event and behind No. 7-ranked LSU (845) and No. 24 Texas A&M (847).

Potgieter, the first-day leader at 8-under 136, maintained his lead for the majority of the final round and built a three-stroke lead over Bondesson and defending champion Phichaksn Maichon heading into the final hole.

A birdie by Bondesson at the par-3, No. 9 helped LSU claim its first team title since 2012 while denying Texas A&M its fourth straight crown. Potgieter would four-putt on the final hole to force the third overall playoff in tournament history and first since Adam Corbelson of New Orleans claimed the 2009 crown.

Both players recorded par on the first hole – the No. 9 – before both would birdie the second hole at No. 1. On the third playoff hole, back at No. 9 – Bondesson would hit his drive into the water and would settle for a double bogey while Potgieter would chip onto the green after an errant tee shot and putt twice to secure the win.

Potgieter would be joined in the top-10 by teammate Kyle Bennett, who finished tied for sixth at 4-under 212. Bennett posted an even-round score of 72 to extend his streak of consecutive rounds of par or below to nine.

Eli Ortego posted a 2-under-70 in his final round at the Louisiana Classics to finish tied for 19th overall at even-par 216. Carter Schmitt posted a 3-over-par 75 in the final round and finished at 8-over 224 for the Ragin' Cajuns with Jean Louis du Plessis finishing at 225 after posting a 77.

Louisiana will return to action on April 7-8 when it competes in the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast in Estero, Fla.
