Cajuns Conference Win Streak Snapped in San Marcos

2/19/2025 9:25:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Louisiana’s recipe for win over Texas State the week prior used against the team

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A quiet first quarter and missed opportunities early in the fourth quarter were the markers in the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team falling 69-58 to Texas State on Wednesday, February 19 at Strahan Arena in San Marcos, Texas.

The Ragin' Cajuns (12-13, 8-7 SBC) made just one field goal in the game's first 10 minutes and found themselves trailing 18-9.

Louisiana picked up the pace the next two quarters shooting a combined 16-of-27 (59%), but was never able to completely overtake the Bobcats (11-15, 5-10 SBC).

Four straight unanswered makes to start the second quarter capped off by an Erica Lafayette triple drew an 18-all tie by the 6:54 mark. Texas State had a quick response, a layup from Crystal Smith 13 seconds later kicking off an 11-3 run that had the Cajuns back on their heels again trailing 29-21 four minutes before halftime.

The Bobcats first-half edge was buoyed by a four-point play and shot clock buzzer beating three-pointer, an advantage that helped the hosts withstand a 22-point second quarter from the Cajuns.

Louisiana used its defense in the third quarter to catch up again and grab its first lead of the night. The Cajuns held the Bobcats scoreless for a four-minute stretch during an 8-0 run finished off by Kamryn Jones' layup at 2:54 for a 46-44 edge.

The Bobcats answered on the ensuing possession and had corresponding points after the Cajuns scored on their next two possessions. Skylah Travis' layup at 2:01 was matched by a basket from Ja'mia Harris making it 48-all just 17 seconds later, then after Nubia Benedith sank two free throws for a 50-48 lead at 1:22 it was Harris drawing a three-point play to put Texas State ahead 51-50.

Minutes into the fourth quarter Texas State left the door open for the Cajuns to possibly steal the lead back, the hosts turning the ball over four times in the first 2:15 of the period. UL failed to capitalize, though, only getting a Lanay Wheaton free throw during the stretch and remaining behind 53-51.

After dancing around trouble, Texas State regained distance getting a layup at 7:18 from Destiny Terrell to make it a two-possession game and then turned the Cajuns over which led to a layup at 6:30 for a 57-51 advantage.

The shooting slump that plagued the first quarter returned in the final stanza and kept the Cajuns from mounting a comeback. UL shot 3-of-13 down the stretch, marred by a five-minute stretch with only one make after Travis' layup at 6:12 had cut the deficit to 57-53 – the Bobcats taking advantage by rolling of a 9-2 run to open a double-digit lead.

Lafayette paced the Cajuns with 15 points for her 14th double-digit scoring output in 15 conference games. Benedith (13 points) and Travis (10 points) joined her in double figures.

Travis nabbed a game-high tying eight rebounds, finishing just shy of a third double-double in the past four SBC games. Benedith made her way to the free throw line for eight attempts, converting five, while Lafayette was the lone Cajun to attempt and make a three-pointer (1-of-5).

The Bobcats flipped the script from the last Wednesday's meeting at the Cajundome, outscoring Louisiana 30-26 in the paint and winning the points off of turnovers battle by a 22-11 count. Harris was the leading scorer with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.

The loss snapped Louisiana's three-game conference win streak. It was the team's fifth straight road loss dating back to mid-January, dropping the squad to 2-9 on the road this season (2-5 in SBC play).

Despite the loss the Ragin' Cajuns maintained their position in the SBC standings, currently in sole possession of sixth place. Louisiana remains two games clear of Georgia State (due to having tiebreaker), which lost to JMU, in the race for a spot which comes with three byes to start the SBC Tournament.
