Louisiana won the battle on the boards 41-30
MONROE - Despite winning the rebound battle by double digits and leading by eight in the second half, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team fell to ULM, 62-58 on Saturday, February 22 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, Louisiana.
Tamiah Robinson had a solid all-around game with 13 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Ashlyn Jones was the only other Ragin' Cajun in double figures with 13 points. Louisiana crushed the Warhawks on the glass, winning the rebound battle 41-30.
Skylah Travis led all players with nine boards, with five on the offensive end. The Cajuns (12-14, 8-8 SBC) ended the game with 19 offensive boards that led to 12 second-chance points. Louisiana also won the battle in the paint, 34-26, in the effort.
Both offenses took a bit to get going as the Warhawks (11-16, 7-9 SBC) held a 9-4 lead with 3:35 to go in the opening frame. Back-to-back buckets by Robinson and Nubia Benedith brought Louisiana back within one before ULM answered with a three. Erica Lafayette scored the final three points of the quarter to make it 12-11 after 10 minutes of action.
Louisiana took their first lead on a three by Lanay Wheaton to make it 16-14 early in the second quarter. Travis stretched it to four on the team's next possession and moments later a free throw by Dacia Jones put Louisiana ahead 21-16. ULM rallied and tied the score with a 7-2 run but a three by Aasia Sam and a layup by Ashlyn Jones sent the Cajuns into the locker room leading 28-23.
After trading baskets on the first two possessions, Robinson put the Cajuns up by seven at 32-25 with a layup. Just as it looked like Louisiana would pull away, ULM tied the score with a 7-0 run. Ahead 38-36, Ashyln Jones started a Cajun run with a putback layup. Robinson connected on a jumper before Ashlyn Jones hit another layup for an eight-point lead at 44-36. A pair of late Warhawk free throws made it 44-38 after three quarters.
Louisiana maintained the lead at 53-45 before a 6-0 run by ULM got them back within a possession. Wheaton made it 55-51 with 3:37 to play, but the offense went cold, only scoring three points the rest of the way. ULM retook a 58-57 lead with just over a minute to play that they wouldn't relinquish.
The loss was the sixth straight on the road for the Ragin' Cajuns who fell to 2-10 away from the Cajundome in the 2024-25 season. ULM snapped an 11-game home losing streak to UL which dated back to January 2014.
The Ragin' Cajuns slipped into a sixth-place tie with Old Dominion in the Sun Belt standings ahead of the final two-game stretch next week, the Monarchs currently holding the tiebreaker for the No. 6 spot which comes with three byes in the upcoming SBC Tournament in Pensacola. Following Saturday's result, the highest UL can now finish in the standings is the No. 5 spot.
Louisiana returns to the Cajundome for the final time this season to host South Alabama on Wednesday, February 26 with tip-off scheduled for 5:00 p.m., then concludes the regular season on the road at Southern Miss on Friday, February 28.
