Kentrell Garnett shoots a three against South Alabama

Cajuns Can’t Hang onto Late Lead in Overtime Thriller

2/1/2025 11:23:00 PM | Men's Basketball

It was the team’s first overtime game since the 2022-23 season

LAFAYETTE - Despite leading for much of the night the Louisiana men's basketball team fell in overtime to South Alabama, 62-58, on Saturday in the Cajundome.

Mostapha El Moutaouakkil led the offense and posted his first double-double of the year with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Kentrell Garnett now sits at 999 career points after scoring 12 while adding five assists. Bradon Hardy and Christian Wright each finished with eight points and three assists in the effort.

The Cajuns jumped out to the early lead thanks to the three-ball and some poor shooting by the Jaguars. A pair from long range by Garnett and one from Chancellor White gave them an early 13-6 lead. Wright made it 19-9 with a three before the game got defensive. A layup by Kyndall Davis put Louisiana ahead 31-18 with 1:14 left in the half, a score they would take into the locker room.

A three by Hardy made it 36-22, Louisiana's largest lead of the night, early in the second half. The Jaguar offense found their grove and thanks to an 8-0 run got back into the ballgame. The visitors cut the Cajun lead to one but Kyran Ratliff made it 49-45 with 7:15 to play. After a pair of free throws by South Alabama, Wright hit a three to back up by five. The Jags scored the next five points and tied the score at 52.

Louisiana trailed by three with 2:20 to go at 56-53, but the defense held South Alabama scoreless from there while El Moutaouakkil hit three free throws, sending the game into overtime.

In the extra period, El Moutaouakkil made a layup on the team's first possession but the offense went cold from there, unable to score the rest of the way. South Alabama hit one field goal in overtime but connected on four free throws for the difference in the game.

The Ragin' Cajuns hit the road next week beginning with Georgia Southern on Wednesday before heading north for the second half of the MAC-SBC Challenge against Northern Illinois on Saturday.
