Record-setting performance for freshman includes program's sixth hat trick

LAFAYETTE – After matching a school record for points in a single match and recording the sixth hat trick in program history, Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns freshman Miku Kurihara was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

The honor marks the second consecutive week a Ragin' Cajun has earned the conference's top offensive award. Redshirt freshman Carson Glenn was recognized on Oct. 21, making the duo the first set of Louisiana teammates to earn back-to-back weekly SBC offensive honors.

Kurihara, a native of Chigasaki, Japan, scored three goals and added two assists in Louisiana's dominant 8-0 victory at Troy on Friday. Her performance marked the program's first hat trick since Annika Schmidt accomplished the feat in 2015.

Her eight points (three goals, two assists) tied the single-match school record previously achieved by Yazmin Montoya and Schmidt in 2013.

Kurihara sent a perfectly placed direct kick into the box in the eighth minute that set up Charlotte Hinchey's header for a 1-0 lead. She followed with a pair of goals just four minutes apart later in the first half, helping Louisiana take a 4-0 advantage at intermission. The freshman added her third goal in the 51st minute and capped her night with an assist on Salma Elhaimer's score in the 61st minute.

Louisiana (7-5-4, 4-2-3 SBC), which has clinched a berth in next week's Sun Belt Conference Championships in Foley, Ala., will close out the regular season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts ULM (10-2-4, 5-0-4 SBC) at the Home Bank Soccer and Track Complex. Admission is free.
