Louisiana had won six in a row in the series
LAFAYETTE - Despite a strong start on Thursday the Louisiana men's basketball team fell to Texas State, 89-74, in the Cajundome. The Ragin' Cajuns had won the previous six in the series.
Brandon Hardy led the offense and tied a career-high with 15 points. Mostapha El Moutaouakkil added 12 points, doing almost all his damage at the free throw line where he was 10-for-12. Christian Wright and Kyran Ratliff finished with nine points off the bench.
El Moutaouakkil got the offense going by getting to the free throw line. The junior scored five of the team's first seven from the charity stripe to build a two-point lead early. The sides traded points when the Cajuns took a two-score lead thanks to a 6-0 run. El Moutaouakkil got it going with a layup, followed by layups from Wright and Hardy for a 19-14 lead.
A three-pointer by Hardy pushed the Cajun lead to seven at 27-20 with just over seven minutes to go in the half. The Cajuns struggled offensively in the final five minutes of the half, as a five-point lead turned into a five-point deficit, 38-33, heading into the locker room.
The visitors scored the first five points out of the half to take a double digit lead. Louisiana hung in the game and trailed 65-58 with 9:37 to play, but a 6-1 run by the Bobcats put the game out of reach for good.
Louisiana remains at home where they'll host Southern Miss at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
