UNH Prevails Over Louisiana in Tussle at Texas A&M Invitational

Each set of closely contested match settled after both sides reached 20 points
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Teas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team fell short in the waning moments of all three sets as New Hampshire captured a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) win in a tightly contested match in the Texas A&M Invitational at Reed Arena in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
By coming up with the key rallies late each frame, UNH (4-3) came out on top in an all-out battle that saw the two teams combine for 300 attack attempts, 146 digs, 17 blocks and the defenses force a combined 50 errors. The Wildcats' slim 41-38 advantage in kills pulled them past the Ragin' Cajuns (2-4).
The match featured 29 ties and 12 lead changes with a knotted score of 20-all each stanza plus Louisiana forcing extra points for a chance to extend them match in the third set.
UL started the day with seven kills on .583 hitting to build an 11-7 lead before the Wildcats vaulted ahead with a 12-4 run. Jazmine Gaston, who led the early surge, later evened the set at 20-all with her sixth kill.
UNH got its first break of the day when back-to-back Cajuns miscues created a critical two-point separation from a tie at 21.
The Wildcats rode the momentum of a successful challenge in the second set to a 2-0 match advantage. After the reversal trimmed UL's lead to 19-18, seven of the final eight points ended in UNH's favor – the Wildcats becoming the survivor of a frame that saw 14 ties and six lead changes.
Louisiana's defense forced UNH into four errors during a 6-0 run that opened a 16-13 led in Set 3. The Wildcats rallied to a tie but the Cajuns recaptured the lead at 21-20 following a Lauryn Hill kill.
A block and kill capped off a 3-0 run that pushed UNH ahead 23-21. The Cajuns later used a combo block from Cami Hicks and Cailin Demps followed by a kill from Jaylynn McNeill to stave off match point twice and force extra points.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Gaston fired off a team-leading 13 kills and was supported by 12 off the hands of Demps. The duo accounted for 25 of Louisiana's 38 kills.
Hicks had a hand in six blocks for her fourth outing of at least five this season which pushed her season total to 34 blocks through six matches. She increased her career blocks total to 386 which leaves her 10 shy of the program's rally scoring era career mark (Kim Rodgers, 396).
Libero Mio Yamamoto rounded up 17 digs to lead a trio of Cajuns in double digits that included setter Megan Hawkins with 14 digs and Gaston with 10 digs.
Hawkins (17) and Danielle Taix (11) combined for 28 assists. Yamamoto added eight assists.
With their dig totals, Gaston and Hawkins collected their third and second double-doubles of the season, respectively.
