Louisiana Turns Up the Offense, Puts Away Louisiana Tech

Ragin’ Cajuns pile up 48 kills and take control down the stretch in each set

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team used its offense to create separation down the stretch in each set Friday, powering past Louisiana Tech 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 for the straight sets sweep to start a Sun Belt Conference volleyball series at E.K. Long Gym.

The Ragin' Cajuns (8-10, 3-2 SBC) averaged 16 kills per set and hit .353 (48 K, 12 E, 102 TA), turning to their attack to settle a contest that featured 27 ties. Louisiana closed the opening set on a 7-2 run, broke open the second with eight unanswered points and claimed four of the final five points in the third to complete the sweep.

On a night when defense wasn't the driving force, Louisiana's 48-33 advantage in kills supplied the difference. The Ragin' Cajuns finished with four blocks to Tech's six and held a narrow 37-35 edge in digs, while the visitors hit .244.

Lolo Lambert and Marlee Ervin paced UL's offensive efforts as they combined for 31 kills, nearly matching Tech's team total.

Lambert delivered a match-high 16 kills on .591 hitting, while Ervin added 15 kills and hit .444. The duo committed just six combined errors in 49 swings.

Sarah Schnell finished with seven kills and Jazmine Gaston added five. Rhyan Miciotto handed out 23 assists, Ryleigh Garis supplied 19 and Kennedy Gustafson collected a match-high 14 digs.

Louisiana produced its highest hitting percentage in SBC play this season and second-highest overall (trailing only .382 vs. Hampton on Sept. 10) in collecting a second consecutive victory which pulled the team above .500 in SBC play.

Taylor Woods led Louisiana Tech (7-12, 0-5 SBC) with 11 kills on .526 hitting.

Friday's contest marked the first meeting between the Ragin' Cajuns and Bulldogs since the 2005 season. It was the first conference matchup since 2000 – Tech's last prior season as a member of the SBC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana's closing surge in the opening set began after Louisiana Tech pulled even at 18. Consecutive kills from Jazmine Gaston and Lambert restored the lead, and Sarah Schnell added two kills as the Ragin' Cajuns moved ahead 23-20.

Following a Tech setting error, Lindsey Henry supplied the finishing kill. UL totaled 15 kills against just two attack errors in the frame.

The Ragin' Cajuns elevated their production in the second, piling up 20 kills on .441 hitting.

Leading 14-12, Louisiana rattled off eight straight points, with Kennedy Gustafson serving the final seven. Ervin produced three kills during the burst, Gaston added two and Emily Williams contributed another. Lambert and Ervin combined for 15 kills in the set.

Louisiana needed a comeback in the third after falling behind 15-11. The Ragin' Cajuns drew even at 19 on an Ervin kill, then turned to Lambert to finish. She recorded four kills after a 20-all tie, including the match-winner, while Henry and Schnell teamed for a block during the decisive stretch.
