Temple Takes Three-Set Battle from Louisiana at Texas A&M Invitational

Offensive efficiency lifts Owls past the Ragin’ Cajuns
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Teas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team was handed a straight sets defeat in similar fashion to its opening match in the Texas A&M Invitational, falling 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 19-25) to Temple on Saturday, September 14 at Reed Arena in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
Just as New Hampshire did on Friday, it was Temple (4-5) breaking free in the final moments of each set. Louisiana (2-5) was within two points or less prior to the Owls hitting 20 points in each set.
Temple's efficiency proved to be the difference, the Owls holding a 45-36 advantage in kills while out-hitting the Ragin' Cajuns .286 (45-13-112) to .142 (36-20-113).
Most of the contest was an offensive shootout between Temple's Taylor Davenport with 19 kills and Louisiana's Lauryn Hill with 14 kills. The Owls went away from Davenport for the final five kills of the match to shake off the Ragin' Cajuns.
There were 11 ties and three lead changes in Set 1 with the Ragin' Cajuns a point away from another tie after back-to-back combo blocks from Cami Hicks and Jaylynn McNeill trimmed Temple's lead to 24-23. The Owls found a side out on the next rally to take the match lead.
Louisiana jumped out to an 8-5 lead in Set 2, however Temple finished the frame with 17 kills on .395 hitting which was the leverage used to claim a 2-0 match lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns defense threw up three straight blocks during a 6-0 run in Set 3 that opened another 8-5 lead. Despite the Owls rallying, UL pulled even at 17-all with an overpass kill from Hicks. Temple then used three straight kills from three different attackers and an ace to open an insurmountable lead.
Saturday's match marked the first-ever meeting between the two programs. With the loss, Louisiana finished the regular season winless (0-3) in neutral site matches.
LEADING THE RAGIN' CAJUNS
Hill picked up 11 of her team-leading 14 kills over the final two sets, providing the steady hand as Louisiana sought a comeback.
Jazmine Gaston produced seven kills, Cailin Demps provided six kills while the middles (Hicks and Chelsea Gilmore) combined for nine kills off 25 attempts.
Hicks finished with five blocks to reach the amount for the fifth time in seven matches. She increased her season total to 39 blocks (1.4/set) and her career tally to 391 which leaves her five blocks of the program's rally scoring era career leader Kim Rodgers (396).
McNeill matched Hicks with five blocks, tying the high-mark of her young collegiate career.
UL out-dug Temple 49-45 paced by Gaston and Megan Hicks who tied for match-high honors with 10 digs apiece. They led a group of four Cajuns that surpassed five digs with Mio Yamamoto (nine digs) and Danielle Taix (six digs) following along.
