Cajuns Eliminate Tigers To Stay Alive In College Station, 12-5

Louisiana to face loser of Texas/Texas A&M on Sunday at 2 p.m.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Caleb Stelly and Luke Yuhasz had three hits each while Andrew Herrmann pitched 5.0 solid innings in relief as No. 22-ranked Louisiana defeated in-state opponent Grambling in an elimination game in the NCAA Bryan-College Station Regional on Saturday at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.

Louisiana (41-19), the No. 2 seed in the field, scored eight runs over the first 3.0 innings and collected 14 hits off give Grambling (26-28) pitchers. The win kept the Cajuns alive in the double-elimination tournament and will face the loser of Saturday night's contest against Texas (36-22) and Texas A&M (45-13) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Kyle DeBarge recorded a pair of singles to increase his single-season mark for total bases to 176, breaking the previous school-record (174) held by Jonathan Lucroy in 2007. The junior All-America candidate drove in three runs, increasing his season-total to 71, to become the third player in school history – and the first since Greg Blevins' school-record 75 in 1990 – to drive in 70 or runs in a season.

Louisiana scored four runs in the second inning off Grambling starter Miguel Baez (0-2) as it took advantage of five walks during the first 1.2 innings of the game. After leaving the bases loaded in the first, the Ragin' Cajuns picked up one-out singles by Jose Torres and Yuhasz before eventually loading the bases for the second straight inning after Trey LaFleur was hit by a pitch.

DeBarge would get Louisiana on the board when he lifted a two-run single to center for a 2-0 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns would add two more runs in the frame after Stelly and Conor Higgs each drew bases-loaded walks to chase Baez.

The Ragin' Cajuns added four more runs in the third after Grambling cut the lead to 4-1 on Jose Vargas' one-out single down the left-field line. The Tigers threatened after loading the bases with one out against starter JT Etheridge, but Herrmann would come in and immediately pick off Martavius Thomas at first before fanning leadoff hitter Tiger Borom to end the inning.

A leadoff walk to Torres and Yuhasz's single up the middle would lead to John Taylor's two-run double into the right-field corner which increased Louisiana's lead to 6-1. Two batters later, DeBarge would score the hard way as he lifted an RBI single to right-center and took second after Taylor beat Trevor Hatton's throw to the plate. An attempted throw to get DeBarge out at second would get into centerfield and DeBarge would score from second on the first of three Tiger errors in the game.

Bryan Broussard, Jr., would drive in Lee Amedee in the sixth with a two-out RBI single to give Louisiana a 9-2 lead before back-to-back doubles by Stelly and Higgs would increase the Ragin' Cajuns lead to 10-4.

Yuhasz capped off his 3-for-5 afternoon in the ninth when he belted a solo home run to left before Stelly's two-out RBI single drove in Taylor.

Herrmann (6-3), making his second relief appearance of the season, scattered three hits and struck out three batters. Etheridge fanned two batters and allowed a pair of hits in 1.1 innings for Louisiana while Blake McGehee pitched the final 2.2 innings and fanned one.

Hatton and Cameron Bufford each homered for Grambling, making its 10th appearance in the NCAA Regionals and first since 2010. Hatton and Vargas had two hits each to lead the Tigere while Ashton Inman drove in a run.
