Ragin' Cajuns close out regular season against Georgia Southern, South Alabama
LAFAYETTE – The No. 22-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Baseball team closes out its 2024 midweek schedule on Tuesday when it entertains Jackson State at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Louisiana (34-15) plays its last of 14 midweek games during the 2024 season where the Ragin' Cajuns have posted an 11-2 record. The Ragin' Cajuns avoided a sweep on Sunday against Sun Belt Conference rival Troy with a wild 14-13 victory.
Trey LaFleur, Kyle DeBarge, John Taylor and Conor Higgs each homered for Louisiana while the Ragin' Cajuns collected a season-high eight doubles in the contest – one shy of the school record last set in the 1999 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
LaFleur (.364-8-28) leads Louisiana in batting average while DeBarge (.355-17-56) paces the team in home runs and RBI.
The junior shortstop and All-America candidate enters the final seven games of the regular season two home runs shy of tying the single-season, school-record (19) set by David King (1989) and David Alvis (1985).
Right-hander Matthew Holzhammer (3-1, 4.97 ERA) will earn his first start of the season on the mound for Louisiana after making his first 20 appearances of the season out of the bullpen.
Jackson State (29-16) earned a pair of wins over SWAC rival Mississippi Valley on Sunday before concluding the series Monday night. JSU pounded out 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep of MVSU, using nine extra-base hits and four home runs to claim the series.
The Tigers have picked up notable non-conference wins this season over Butler, Memphis and New Orleans.
Joseph Eichelberger (.389-3-46), Jordan McCladdie (.355-2-33) and Rodney Hibler, Jr. (.351-5-35) have combined to record 69 of JSU's 111 stolen bases (out of 122 attempts) this season. Lenny Montesano has hit a team-high eight home runs this season for the Tigers.
The meeting will be the 10th between the schools with Louisiana holding an 8-1 lead. The Ragin' Cajuns have won the last five contests, including a 7-0 win in last year's contest in Lafayette.
