Ragin' Cajuns six shots shy of advancing to Match Play for second straight year
MADISON, Miss. – Jake Marler fired a 2-under-par 70 while Eli Ortego and Burke Alford each posted a 1-under-71 in the final round, but the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team fell short of advancing to match play in the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championships on Wednesday at Annandale Golf Club.

Louisiana, the defending SBC champion, posted a team score of 2-over-288 in the final round of stroke play and finished at 883 for the 54-hole tournament – one stroke behind 2023 SBC runner-up Georgia Southern and six shots behind Texas State and Marshall for third place.

Marler carded three birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back at No. 6 and 7 before his only blemish on the day with a bogey at No. 8. After making the turn at 2-under-34, Marler played a bogey-free round on the back nine to post Louisiana's lowest score of the tournament and finished tied for 27th overall at 6-over-222.

Ortego, coming off rounds of 72 and 75 during the opening two days, posted a birdie and eagle on the front nine and made the turn at even-par 36. The junior dropped to 1-over for the round after a bogey at No. 10 before rallying to post birdies at 14 and 18 to finish in a tie for 11th place overall at 2-over-218.

Alford, who posted a team-high five birdies in the final round, collected four on the front nine and made the turn at 1-under-35. The Shreveport native moved to 2-under for the round after a birdie at No. 11 before posting a bogey at No. 14 to fall back to 1-under and eventually finishing at 9-over-225 for the event.

Malan Potgieter recorded a 6-over-78 in the final round for Louisiana and tied for 21st at 5-over-221 while Dylan Keating posted an 80 in the final 18 holes and finished at 232.

South Alabama's Hugo Thyr posted a 4-under-68 in the final round after posting birdies on six of his final nine holes in regulation to finish 4-under par 212 and defeat Arkansas State's Thomas Schmidt in a playoff. Thyr became the first repeat individual champion in league history since Alan Schulte of Old Dominion in 1984-85.

Arkansas State (859), ULM (870), Marshall (877) and Texas State (877) claimed the top four spots and advanced to Thursday's Match Play semifinals with the winner earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
