Ortego, Potgieter Pace Cajuns at SBC Championships

Louisiana tied for fifth after first day; will tee off second round at 9:15 a.m.
MADISON, Miss. – Louisiana's Eli Ortego and Malan Potgieter each recorded an even-par 72 and the Ragin' Cajuns concluded the opening day of the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Men's Golf Championships in a fifth-place tie on Monday at Annandale Golf Club.
The second round of the 54-hole stroke play event begins on Tuesday at 8 a.m. with a split tee start from Holes 1 and 10. Louisiana, which will be paired with James Madison and Texas State in the second round, will begin at 9:15 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.

Ortego, who was tied for fourth overall after the opening round, completed the front nine bogey-free with an even-par 36 before sinking his first of three birdies on the day at the par-4, 407-yard No. 10. A pair of bogeys over the next four holes moved him down to 1-over for the round before recording birdies on two of the next three holes to move to even par.
Potgieter made the turn at 1-over-37 after consecutive bogeys at No. 8 and 9 before recording a birdie at No. 11. The sophomore overcame a bogey at No. 17 to sink a birdie at No. 18 to join Ortego in the top-five after the first round and four strokes behind first-day leader Thomas Schmidt (-4) of Arkansas State.
Burke Alford finished strong down the stretch for Louisiana after making a pair of birdies, including a final off the fringe at No. 18, to finish with a 6-over-78. Jake Marler carded a 79 for the Ragin' Cajuns while Dylan Keating posted an identical 79 in his first SBC championship event.
Arkansas State, led by the 1-2 tandem of Schmidt (4-under-68) and Jake Lile (3-under-69), claimed the first-day lead in the 14-team event with a team score of even-par 288. Troy was nine strokes behind in second place at 297 with Marshall (299), ULM (299), Louisiana, Georgia Southern (301) and Southern Miss (301) following.
