Morgan Brilliant In Relief; Cajuns Rally To Defeat A-State, 7-6

Taylor's sacrifice fly in ninth drives in go-ahead run; series finale set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
JONESBORO, Ark. – True freshman Chase Morgan pitched 4.0 brilliant innings of hitless relief to earn his first collegiate victory and Louisiana posted its third come-from-behind victory of the season with a 7-6 win over Arkansas State in a Sun Belt Conference game on Saturday at Tomlinson Stadium-Kell Field.
The rubber game of the three-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Right-hander Carson Fluno (1-0, 3.78 ERA) will earn the start for Louisiana (10-8, 1-1 Sun Belt) in the series finale while Arkansas State (12-8, 1-1 Sun Belt) will counter with right-hander Dylan Heine (1-0, 4.02 ERA).
Lee Amedee's bases-clearing double in the eighth inning helped Louisiana dig itself out of a 6-2 hole after seven inning before John Taylor's sacrifice fly in the ninth gave the Ragin' Cajuns the lead for good.
Morgan (1-1), who struck out two in his longest outing of the season, worked out of a jam in the sixth after Arkansas State placed runners on the corners with one out and a 6-2 lead.
The southpaw retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced as he got Blake Burris to pop up to short before getting Cason Tollett to ground out to keep A-State from extending the lead.
Louisiana, which stranded 11 of its 13 runners in the first five innings, broke through in the eighth scoring four times to tie the game at 6-6. Bryan Broussard, Jr., led off the inning with a walk and moved to third when Conor Higgs collected his third hit of the game with a single up the middle.
Broussard scored when John Taylor reached on a fielder's choice and Duncan Pastore followed with a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. After Kyle DeBarge drew a walk to load the bases, Amedee laced an opposite-field double off ASU reliever Arlon Butts to clear the bases and tie the game at 6-6.
Back-to-back walks to Broussard and Higgs off ASU reliever Bryce Schares (0-2) with one out in the ninth, along with a successful double steal allowed Taylor to lift a fly ball to center and allowing Broussard to score the go-ahead run.
