Ortego Shoots Even-Par To Lead Cajuns at Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE – Eli Ortego posted back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Golf team on the opening day of the 39th Annual Louisiana Classics on Monday at Oakbourne Country Club.

The final round of the 54-hole event will begin on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. with a fixed tee start from the No. 1 and 10 tees. Admission is free and open to the public.

Tuesday's final round will be streamed live on ESPN+ beginning at 9 a.m., with live results available at GolfStat.com. Louisiana, which posted a team score of 590, will be paired with Little Rock and Rice in the final round and will tee off from the No. 1 tee beginning at 8:06 a.m.

Ortego finished tied for 23rd overall after the opening day with an even-par 144 through 36 holes. Malan Potgieter posted a 2-under-par 70 in the second round and finished at 2-over-146 for Louisiana with Dylan Keating recording a 36-hole score of 5-over 149.

Jake Marler recorded a 151 for the Ragin' Cajuns with Burke Alford posting a 155 after the opening two rounds.

Three Cajuns – Maxmilian Feistmantl (149), Matthew Lotz (157) and Dillon Barnard (157) – each competed as individuals.

Two-time defending champion Texas A&M claimed the first-day lead with a team score of 558 and seven strokes ahead of second-place LSU (565). Michigan (570), Wake Forest (571) and Sam Houston (572) rounded out the top five teams in the field.

In the opening round, Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon tied for the second-lowest score in the history of the event at 8-under-64 to stake an early lead at 11-under-133. Hunter Thomson of Michigan was one shot behind at 134 with TCU's Gustav Frimodt (137) and LSU freshman Jay Mendell (138) trailing.
