Winning Streak Snapped at Seven; Julien Reaches Career Scoring Milestone Wednesday Night

Julien became the 51st Cajun to reach 1,000 points in the first half
LAFAYETTE, Louisiana – With a huge first half, Kobe Julien became the 51st player in the history of the Louisiana men's basketball team to reach 1,000 points for their career. Julien had 20 of his 28 in the opening half to reach the milestone, but it wasn't enough to overcome a second half surge by Georgia State in a 78-69 defeat. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak by the Cajuns.
Julien ended the night with a game-high 28, doing the majority of his damage from the free throw line. The junior went 11-for-14 from the charity stripe and also grabbed four rebounds and had a pair of steals. Joe Charles recorded his 10th double-double of the year with a 15-point, 11-rebound performance.
The Cajuns (15-9, 8-4 SBC) came out firing, taking a 10-3 lead thanks to a pair of threes from Charles. Themus Fulks connected on a layup to go ahead by 10 before the first media timeout. The lead was pushed further by a three by Julien before the Panthers (10-13, 5-7 SBC) broke a six-and-a-half-minute stretch without a field goal.
The teams traded buckets before a 6-0 run by the visitors pulled them back within five at 25-20. The visitors cut the Cajun lead to just three before Julien hit back-to-back threes to stretch it back to nine at 33-24. Louisiana kept that advantage there heading into the locker room with a 39-30 lead.
Kentrell Garnett stretched the lead to 11 early in the second half with a three but the Panthers refused to go away. An 8-0 Panther run trimmed the lead to two before the Cajuns responded with a 5-0 run to lead 57-50. With Louisiana leading 59-52, the Panthers broke out on a 10-0 run to take the lead, the first time the Cajuns had trailed in the second half since January 10 at Troy.
The Cajuns struggled down the stretch, scoring just five points in the final four minutes as the Panthers extended their lead at the free throw line for the win.
The Cajuns are back at it on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the second half of the MAC-SBC Challenge. They'll host Bowling Green for the first time in program history in the Cajundome in the final game of the challenge this season.
