Louisiana Overpowers South Alabama, 74-42

The Ragin’ Cajuns scored 32 points in the first quarter, the most against a conference opponent since 2016

MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four after overpowering South Alabama, 74-42, Wednesday night at the Mitchell Center.
 
The 32-point margin of victory is the most by the Louisiana this season.
 
The Ragin' Cajuns opened the game on a 13-0 run over the first 3:56 game of the game. Tamiah Robinson opened the scoring with a layup before Tamera Johnson connected on a jumper and Brandi Williams hit a 3-pointer. After Louisiana forced a turnover, Jaylyn James converted it into two points, forcing the Jaguars to call a timeout.
 
The Cajuns stretched their lead to 15 with 4:41 remaining before South Alabama cut the lead to nine with a 6-0 run. Louisiana responded as it closed out the first frame with a 12-2 run capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Aasia Sam as Louisiana led 32-13.
 
In the first quarter, the Cajuns shot 72.2-percent from the floor on 13-of-18 shooting, marking the highest shooting percentage in a quarter this season with 10-or-more field goals. The 32 points were the most in a quarter since 2021 and the most against a Sun Belt opponent since 2016.
 
After taking a 44-21 lead into the locker room, Louisiana kept the pressure on the Jaguars as they outscored South Alabama, 16-8, in the third quarter.
 
James led the Cajuns offensively with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting as Nubia Benedith added a career-high 13 points. Tamera Johnson registered 11 points and hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
 
For the game, Louisiana shot 52.6-percent from the floor and limited the Jaguars to 26.9-percent. The Ragin' Cajuns outrebounded the Jaguars, 35-31, as the bench proved to be pivotal, outscoring USA, 34-17.
 
Louisiana plays its final road game of the regular season as it travels to face Texas State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
