Cajuns Lock Up Victory Over Privateers in the First Half

Louisiana turns defense into offense in building decisive edge
LAFAYETTE – With a 20-point edge in points generated off of turnovers in the first half the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team seized control of Tuesday's contest with New Orleans and recorded a 61-46 victory at the Cajundome.

The Ragin' Cajuns (3-1) forced the Privateers (0-6) into 16 turnovers in the decisive opening stanza and netted the halftime difference. UL didn't allow UNO to capitalize on any of its miscues resulting in a commanding 20-0 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Louisiana took the lead for good by turning over UNO on three consecutive possessions near the end of the seven-minute mark of the first quarter. It led to a Jaylyn James jumper and a pair of Tamiah Robinson baskets that quickly grew the lead to 9-3 by the 6:11 mark.

Robinson, who scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the first quarter, pushed the lead into double digits with a layup at 1:41 creating a 15-5 advantage.

The Ragin' Cajuns were assured of a double-digit lead the rest of the night following a second quarter-opening 15-2 run that was capped off by an Erica Lafayette three-pointer at 3:31 and James' three-point play at 2:52 which stretched the margin to 32-9.

UNO's defense quieted UL in the third quarter yielding only one field goal make, a triple by Robinson at 9:29, and in the process cut a 40-15 deficit down to 45-32.

Louisiana pushed away the Privateers in the fourth quarter by dialing up four three-point baskets including back-to-back from Lafayette that started an 8-0 spurt which advanced the lead to 56-36 by at the 4:05 mark.

"We played really good the first half defensively and offensively," head coach Garry Brodhead said. "UNO threw a zone at us in the second half and it kind of caught us off guard, but in the fourth quarter we finished the game much better."

The win was the Cajuns' third straight on the young season, completed a sweep of the November homestand and extended the series win streak over the Privateers to 10 games. Â

Led by a 6-of-8 showing from Robinson, the Ragin' Cajuns finished 15-of-33 (46%) from the floor in the first half in building a commanding 37-15 halftime advantage.

Charged by the 16 turnovers forced, Louisiana's defense limited UNO to just five field goal makes (5-of-18) in the opening stanza.

Robinson finished an impressive 8-of-11 (73%) from the floor which included a 4-of-5 (80%) performance from beyond in the arc in generating her career-high 22 points.

Lafayette returned to double figures with 13 points buoyed by a trio of three-point makes (3-of-6).

UL out-rebounded its opponent for the fourth time in as many outings with Robinson's six boards the top mark amongst nine players with multiple collections leading to a 31-28 edge over the Privateers.

Louisiana competes in the Big Easy Classic being held at the Alario Center in Westwego, Louisiana over Thanksgiving weekend from Friday-Saturday November 29-30.
The Ragin' Cajuns are slated to compete in the opening game of the Big Easy Classic each day, both of their contests set for an 11:00 a.m. tip-off. UL faces Cleveland State on Friday (Nov. 29), followed by a matchup with 2024 WNIT runner-up Minnesota on Saturday (Nov. 30).
