Louisiana’s offense unable to support defensive effort in loss to Cleveland State
WESTWEGO, La. – Hindered by a cold-shooting spell throughout the contest the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Basketball team fell 60-42 to Cleveland State on Friday, November 29 in its opening contest of the Big Easy Classic at the Alario Center.
Louisiana (3-2) shot a season-low 22 percent (14-of-63) which prevented the squad from capitalizing further on forcing Cleveland State (4-2) into 27 turnovers. It also kept the Ragin' Cajuns from keeping pace with a Vikings squad that shot 53 percent (20-of-38).
CSU took full advantage of UL making a single field goal in the first quarter to take control. Erica Lafayette's triple at the 4:18 mark was the lone basket, then immediately after the Vikings produced a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to jump ahead 14-3.
Out of the second quarter media timeout, Jaylyn James made three-pointers on back-to-back possessions trimming the CSU lead to 24-15 by the 3:30 mark. Five unsuccessful attempts afterwards halted the Cajuns progress and resulted in a 28-15 halftime deficit.
Louisiana put a considerable dent in CSU's lead early in the third quarter, closing the gap to 30-23 at 7:39 after a James triple and subsequent swipe and score by Kamryn Jones. CSU countered with a 17-1 run the remainder of the quarter to cement the final outcome.
The Ragin' Cajuns kept battling into the fourth, an and-one conversion from Jones at 6:51 and three-point make from Lafayette at 6:01 part of a six-point surge that lowered the deficit to 53-36. Tamiah Robinson collected a steal and basket on the ensuing possession, but it would be the last field goal make until the final 30 seconds as the Vikings thwarted a potential comeback.
The loss broke Louisiana's three-game winning streak and kept the team winless away from home on the young season.
Cleveland State won for the third time in as many meetings between the two programs. Friday's contest marked the first matchup since the 2017 South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
James led UL in scoring for the second time in the past three contests, generating 12 points boosted by her team-leading three triples.
Jones with nine points and Lafayette with eight points were the Cajuns next leading scorers. Lafayette scored two three-pointers of her own as UL connected on at least five triples for the fourth straight game.
Louisiana was out-rebounded for the first time (39-32), though did hold a commanding 19-5 edge in offensive rebounds. Jones led the way with four offensive rebounds, one of five players with multiple collections.
Jones collected three steals while James and Robison had two apiece to lead the Cajuns defense which totaled nine swipes. Those efforts factored into UL holding a 19-10 advantage in points off of turnovers.
