Louisiana looks for their first Sun Belt Conference win of the season
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana men's basketball team looks to get back on track on Saturday as they welcome Coastal Carolina to the Cajundome. The Ragin' Cajuns are looking for their first Sun Belt Conference win of the season after having their 19-game home winning streak snapped on Thursday by No. 19 James Madison.
Kentrell Garnett led the offense Thursday night with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Kobe Julien (15) and Hosana Kitenge (11) also finished in double figures. Joe Charles was a force down low with 15 rebounds and three blocks. The performance moved him into second in the SBC in rebounds.
The Cajuns held the Dukes to 68 points, their lowest total of the season. Coming into Thursday the Dukes had scored 91.8 points per game, the third-highest clip in the country. Louisiana forced 19 turnovers, a season-high for JMU, and held them to .414 percent from the field, their second-worst shooting performance of the year.
Story Lines
• Kobe Julien continues to lead the SBC in scoring at 18.4 ppg. The junior is 10th in field goal percentage (.445) and 5th in free throw percentage (.841).
• This match-up features the top two rebounders in the SBC in Joe Charles and Ginka Ojianko. Ojiako leads the league with a 10.3 clip while Charles pulls down 9.6 per game. In conference play, both players are averaging double figures on the boards. Charles leads the conference at 14.0 rpg while Ojiako is fourth at 10.0 through a pair of SBC contests.
• The last two times these teams have played the game has come down to the last shot, being decided by a single point. Two seasons ago the Cajuns came away with a road victory, 65-64, thanks to a three by Kobe Julien with seven seconds left in the game. Last season in Conway the Cajuns fell, 77-76, after being held scoreless in the final minute of regulation.
• Louisiana won the last time these two played in Lafayette, 108-101. The Cajuns overcame a 10-point halftime deficit by scoring 69 points in the second half in the win. Cedric Russell led the comeback effort with 28 points.
• The Cajuns have started the last two seasons 0-2 in SBC play. Last season they ended up the No. 2 seed in the league and cut down the nets in Pensacola to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The team looks to avoid their first 0-3 start in SBC play since the 2019-20 season.
• Joe Charles ranks third in the conference in double-doubles overall with six this season and is tied for 19th in the country. In the Marlin era, Charles is tied for 10th in total double-doubles, one behind Justin Miller and Elfrid Payton.
