Louisiana Comes Up Short in Sunday Action

The Ragin’ Cajuns hosted Lamar for the first time in seven years
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana soccer team came up just short against Lamar on Sunday, September 10 at the Home Bank Soccer/Track Complex in the first meeting between the teams in Lafayette since 2016. Despite a valiant defensive effort, the Ragin' Cajuns fell to the defending Southland Conference Champions by a final score of 2-0.
It was the Cajuns who had the first real chance of the evening, but Tatum Beck's shot from the right side of the net was denied. The Ragin' Cajuns continued to apply offensive pressure with back-to-back corner kicks in the 27th minute, but the Cardinal defense held firm. The Cajun defense was stout in the opening 45 minutes, holding the Cardinals to just three shots as the contest went into the half scoreless.
The Cardinals scored just 1:39 out of the locker rooms to take a 1-0 lead, off a blast from 30 yards out just by the outstretched arms of Makenna Garcia. The visitors looked to add to their lead when Isela Ramirez had a shot from right in front of the net but Garcia was able to get in front of it to keep the deficit at one.
With the Cajuns looking to find the equalizer in the final minutes of the match and on the attack off a corner kick, Ramirez was able to steal the ball and beat the Louisiana defense on the counter for Lamar's second goal of the night.
Garcia made five saves in net in front of the home crowd in the team's first official game in Lafayette since August 20. The team had seven total shots but only their first landed on net.
The team opens Sun Belt Conference action next Sunday, September 17, in San Marcos, Texas against Texas State. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
