Louisiana returns home to host South Florida in a Sunday matinee
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Sisley Stephens' unassisted goal in the 41st minute gave Louisiana an early lead before Middle Tennessee scored on an equalizer in the 59th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw in the season opener for both teams on Thursday at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
Cambell Kivisto took a far-side crossing pass from Idun Kvaale and scored as Middle Tennessee (0-0-1) held a 13-5 advantage in shots. The draw was the first in the 14-match series between the former Sun Belt Conference rivals and was Louisiana's (0-0-1) first in a season-opener since a 1-1 deadlock against McNeese in 2009.
Louisiana attempted three shots in the opening half beginning when Hailly Waterhouse's try in the ninth minute off a corner kick slipped right past the MTSU goal.
Stephens would convert Louisiana's second attempt of the match when her boot off a rebound beat MTSU goalkeeper Hannah Suder to the upper right corner of the net for her second career goal.
Louisiana nearly padded its lead late in the half when newcomer Briana Henry's blast from the top of 18-yard box sailed high over the crossbar.
Kivisto knotted the match at 1-1 in the second half with her first goal of the season after Natalie Mayes had stopped a pair of Blue Raider attempts.
Penelope Montenegro's shot attempt in the 64th minute was blocked by a Blue Raider defender before Bailey Giddings' attempt late in the 87th minute glanced off the right post.
Makenna Garcia started in goal for Louisiana – the first of her career – and posted one save before Mayes closed out the match with two saves.
Kivisto, Kvaale and Eleanor Gough took 10 of MTSU's 13 shots in the match.
