Cristina Tchanichev, celebrating her birthday, clinches the victory in third set tiebreak on Court 4
LAFAYETTE - It was a happy birthday indeed for Cristina Tchanichev whose third-set tiebreaking victory clinched the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Tennis team's 4-3 marathon win over Gonzaga on Wednesday, March 15 at Cajun Courts.
Tchanichev, celebrating her 20th birthday, completed Louisiana's rally from a 3-2 match deficit when her 7-3 win in the third set tiebreaker on Court 4 finished off the third court of the match that needed an extra frame to decide a winner. After Gonzaga's Jenna Sloan evened the third set at 6-6, Tchanichev raced out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker and never looked back.
The birthday celebrant's heroics were made possible by teammate Angelique Berrat being the first to fend off Gonzaga's attempt at stealing the match. Berrat recovered from an early 2-1 deficit in the third set on Court 3 to storm back for the 6-3 win over the Bulldogs' Kianna Oda that evened the contest and set up the winner-take-all scenario with Tchanichev.
Louisiana (5-5) grabbed the momentum early with an exciting comeback win in doubles on Court 2 that saw Momoko Yoshimura and Angel Santiago erase a 4-1 deficit by winning five straight points to stun Oda and Rose Hayes and clinch the doubles point.
The two teams split the first two singles courts that finished, with Carla Urchoeguia's thrilling 6-3, 7-5 win on Court 1 giving Louisiana a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs (8-6) jumped in front momentarily after Tiegan Aitken stopped Yoshimura's comeback attempt on Court 5 by rallying for a 6-4 win in the third set that put the visitors ahead 3-2 in the match.
The Ragin' Cajuns wouldn't be denied, though, as Berrat fended off Oda's advances which included her rally from a 5-2 deficit to force a third set and Tchanichev bounced back from a second set defeat to outlast Sloan for the match clincher.
Berrat extended her personal winning streak to six matches and moved to 6-2 in singles (now 4-0 at No. 3 position) in her collegiate rookie campaign. Urchoeguia collected her first win of the season on Court 1 and improved to 6-4 overall while Tchanichev returned her record back above .500 (at 5-4) and moved to 4-1 at the No. 4 position.
